Did you use the glow plugs at all? True that in warm weather you don't need them much but you do need to let the glow plugs run a few seconds before trying to start it.

How long since it was running?

Yes I did.. and it was running last week. I use it for mowing and I used it last Monday, went out on FRiday and it wouldn't start(fully).. figured.. darn it battery(it was 5 years old) got a new battery, cleaned up the connections.. but didn't start.

Then I checked fuel(made sure it was pumping, and it seems to be fine). Plenty of fuel in the tank. Just won't kick over and if I let it go.. a slight burning smell and small puffs of smoke out the exhaust.

not sure if the file but this is what it sounds like, does. Maybe this link can work?

From that video your engine is turning over very quickly, not a battery problem there. I'd say your not getting fuel but you said you have loosened an injector and fuel comes out without any sign of air.

Only thing that comes to mind is the stop solenoid. I had one that would not retract all the way and did some weird stuff like that. Had a bad gasket and water got into the solenoid body. You can remove it (2 screws) and try to start, if it does be ready to shove it back into the hole (unplugged) to stop the motor... or your can stick something else into hole to push the plunger.

There should be a key position just prior to cranking where the glow plugs are automatically energized. A light on the panel indicates power is applied to the glow plugs. In cool weather hold it there for a few seconds to build some heat before you start cranking. It should start quickly.

i have checked the fuel as much as I know how and it seems pretty good.. when I loosen that nut it just comes out pretty well, just pours out when trying to start.

I'm going to test the glow plugs next. The local shop says they are a wear out item and after 20 years and 1000+ hours it may be time.

I've replaced that before and usually it was a "click" but wouldn't even turn over.

I think there are 2 coils in the fuel stop solenoid. One is energized while starting, and the other is energized while running). Could be the run coil is fubar.

The tractor should start and run with the solenoid removed.
