    Noob question 4 wheel drive

I run 4wd most of the time. Our farm is all mucky bottom land soil. On dry years, the ground might get hard enough by mid summer to not need it, but that is very rate. I also take it out of 4wd on pavement, unless I am doing loader work, in which case, the 4wd stays engaged. On soft ground...

Ford 8N or similar older types

Looking at the hour meters and maintenence records on my modern, loader-eqquied CUT, and my 70 year old 8n, it appears that usage had been just about evenly split over the last 5 years. I also got rid of a couple other, less frequently used antique tractors, the last couple years, so those two...

    Home-made attachments...

I made a rear loader for my old Ford 2000, from a TSC pond scoop and lift boom. It was more effective than a factory front loader on that 2wd tractor (other than a stiff neck) because it didn't have the traction issue. A front loader on a 2wd tractor causes the tractor to loose traction when...

Ford 8N or similar older types

There is a logical reason for that. In spite of what many believe, there actually are a few jobs that can be done more effectively with a 70 year old, 2wd, manual steer, non-loader equipped, gear trandmission gasser than a modern CUT. Two that I can think of right off the bat, is operating my...

    Canopy rather than Cab

They are even worse when they get into a cab. I know a guy who rolled a manure spreader and his new cab tractor, when a bee got in and stung him. Somehow, as he was flailing around in the attack, a can of either got discharged, nearly asphyxiating him and causing him to loose control. That...

    3pt or Stand Alone Splitter

Now that ethanol free gas is readily available, a stand alone is the much better option. Prior to that, carburetor issues alone would have been enough to justify a 3 pt model that runs off the tractor's hydraulics, especially if you are only doing a couple cords per year. I have had a Northern...

Ford 8N or similar older types

The first tractor I purchased was a 1951 8n, from the widow of the original owner, about 35 years ago. It only had 1200 hours on it, because he only used it to tend to a 1 acre garden and small grape orchard, so basically it was just barely broken in when I got it. It was my only tractor for...

    Canopy rather than Cab

I am right with you there. I enjoy clearing snow with my open station tractor. The cool crisp air outside feels wonderful after being cooped up in the factory or our wood heated house all day. I just throw on my insulated coveralls, face mask, arctic boots, and heavy wool lined mittens and I...

    Canopy rather than Cab

If my full time job involved operating a tractor in open fields over the summer then there is no doubt that I would want a cab. I dont think that is the case for many on this mostly CUT forum, and certainly not for me. I would feel cheated, from my freedom of being outside, if my limited...

    Losing a fingernail/toenail

Probably loose it because the heat cauterized the bleeding and stops the drainage. A cold, smaller drill probably gives you a better chance of saving the nail.

    Canopy rather than Cab

Does your cab tractor fit in a standard 7 ft high garage door ? How does or work in the woods ? Has your air conditioner ever given you trouble? Does the glass ever get dirty or broken ? Do you have a full time job inside a heated and air conditioned building ?

    Canopy rather than Cab

That sounds like the one my prior tractor (Ford 2110) had on it. I busted the corners up on that one a little, using the tractor in the woods. It was very large and heavy but did a decent job of blocking the sun. I vastly improved on that one with the one that I made for the John Deere. I...

    Losing a fingernail/toenail

Harbor freight sells a tiny set of drill bits that comes in a small aluminum can that doubles as a chuck. I have used that probably half a dozen times, immediately after smacking a finger, and it has saved the nail every time. Unlike a risky power drill, you turn this by hand, thru the nail...

    Canopy rather than Cab

I am in Western NY, about half way between lake Erie and lake Ontario. It rarely gets that hot around here. I am rather cold blooded. There is no way I could live farther south than around Gettysburg Pa. The heat really kills me, but I dont mind the cold much at all. I have to go to...

    Canopy rather than Cab

There are many reasons why I prefer a canopy, with the chief one being cost. A close second is the fact that I enjoy my time outside mostly because my full time job is inside a factory. Other advantages of a canopy is increased stability due to lower center of gravity, lower maintenance cost...

    Am I Wrong ?

If you buy a good tractor and treat it right, the dealer dont matter that much. I didn't buy from my local dealer, but I did get the brand he carries. It has only broke down once in the 16 years that I have had it, and I was able to get the replacement part (starter) delivered the next day...

    Replacement tractor

Back in 2005, when I was shopping for what will likely be my last new tractor, it seemed to me that the 4720 was a bit high on hp for that size. I opted for the lowest hp offered in the series (43 hp 4120). I also got the gear, "power-reverser" transmission and the base model 400X loader, but...

    Cultipacker Substitute

Keep on the lookout for used cultipackers. They were tough to find for a while, when scrap steel prices were real high. Now that scrap steel prices are low, they are much easier to locate. A neighbor dragged a couple old rusty ones out by the road last summer, by my place in western NY. They...

    Bucket level indicator rod---useful?

I use it just about every time I use the loader. It is real handy when pushing up the snow piles at the end of our driveways and when using forks bolted to the bottom of my bucket.

    Washing an old tractor

Be careful of the seat if you use a pressure washer. I put a small hole thru the vinyl on the one on my JD 4120 a couple years ago, with a 3200 psi pressure washer. A little dab of RTV took care of that but now I got a small black spot on the edge of the yellow seat. I also finished off...

    Knowing What U Know Now!

My biggest issue with the Japanese power plants in 2005 was that I still had 2 surviving close relatives, who were Pacific theater WW 2 veterans at that time. It was partly at their urging, that I went with a tractor powered by an American built JD Powertech engine. Of course it didn't hurt...

    Knowing What U Know Now!

I bought my last tractor in 2005 (new JD 4120). I am very thankful now, that I bought that make and model at that time. It has provided me with 16 years of mostly trouble free service. My only issues were the factory equipped Bosch starter failed at 5 years, the original battery at about 10...

Dealing with leaves on a scut

It seems to me that most people put far too much time, money and effort into dealing with leaves. We have quite a few big old maple trees that dump tons of leaves in our yard each fall. They are great for shade, but the leaves could present a problem if not dealt with effectively. They must all...

    8n electrical issue

I had electrical issues with my 1951 8n 2 years ago. The tractor just quit like the key was turned off. I could not get spark. I changed the points, condenser, dist cap, rotor, and coil but still nothing. It turned out the distributer was shot. The best thing about the 8n's is they have...

    Does HST Transmission Rob Horsepower??

Compared to gear drive, a hydro drive transmission converts a higher percentage of an engine's hp to heat. That heat energy is not useful to get work done. If you are looking to get the most work done, per gallon of fuel, then a gear drive is the best option. So the answer to the op question...

    When do you replace tires?

It was a cheap way to put weight in the tires, and it adds a great deal of traction force and stability to the tractor. Added stability is better than from rim mounted iron weights because the liquid always flows down to the low side. Corrosion is the downside, and nothing will likely grow in...

    When do you replace tires?

I replaced the original front Titan R1's on my 2005 JD 4120 at around 800 hours. The sidewalls were cracked and large sections of rubber was flaking off. I bought Carlile replacements, the same size. Those front Titans just looked to be cheap, low quality tires. They were not showing any...

    When do you replace tires?

I have the same tractor with loaded rears and 2000 hours. It is on its second set of fronts, but still has the original rears. I bought it from the widow of the original owner, with 1200 hours. One of the back rims looks like it is ready to go at any time. It is badly rusted, near the valve...

Buying Advice New Member Looking At First Tractor - Ford (9N/8N)

It doesn't sound like that guy knows about an overrunning coupler. I just got my 1951 8n fired up for the season on Sunday. It started right up after it's long winters nap. One of the original back rims looks like it has just about had it though. Hopefully, I can get one more season out...

Thoughts on moving snow with a 35hp CUT

I much prefer a rear blade to a blower, but I have plenty of room to stack snow. For folks with limited space, a blower makes more sense. The front bucket/rear blade combo works for any amount or type of snow. Blowers clog with some types of snow, and shear pins.

Thoughts on moving snow with a 35hp CUT

I live in an upstate NY region that gets heavy snowfall on occasion. I flew down to southern CA yesterday for work, and got to see some of what you are dealing with, from a few thousand feet above. I took a picture to show my wife, as we crossed over the continental divide. I use a slightly...

Filling a Hundred Holes (6-feet across, 4-feet deep)

I had to haul a similar amount of fill/soil, with a similar sized tractor (JD 4120), last year. It was not too bad. The town highway department had cleared a 500 yard long ditch that ran along our property line. My neighbor didn't want the fill. I talked them into hauling about 4 tandem...

Buying Advice New Member Looking At First Tractor - Ford (9N/8N)

My first tractor was a 1951 8n, which I bought in 1990 from the widow of the original owner. I used it as my primary tractor for a few years. Its biggest handicap is the lack of live hydraulics. Lacking live pto was easily addressed with the addition of an overrunning coupler. I still have...

    1951 8n electrical issue.

This tractor quit on me in mid-October 2019. I am the second owner and it has 2000 hours on it (800 from me since I bought it from the widow of the original owner in 1988). I pushed it into the corner of the barn and have tinkered with it a few times since then. Yesterday, with the help of...

When I bought this tractor, from the widow of the original owner back in 1988, it only had 1200 hours on it. I have about doubled that number of hours over the last 30 years. These days, I mainly just use it for firewood and on my two-row corn planter and cultivator. The year I brought it...

1/2 hour - homemade tree spade

I just took about 1/2 hour to drill a few holes in a piece of 12" x 3" channel-iron and mount it to the 400X loader, heavy-duty bucket on my JD 4120. The section is about 30" long and bolts to the bottom center of the bucket using (2) 1/2" bolts into the existing toothbar holes on the front...

    NH TC40DA vs. Challenger MT275B

Since you will be cutting your lawn with something else and may be working ground with the tractor some day then one thing is certain. Do what ever you can with which ever one you choose (they are both OK), to make sure it has R1 tires, NOT R4's, when you take delivery. R4's are one step up...
