    power tool recommendation

I've had a Northern Tools Powerhorse washer, 3000 PSI, for about 3 years and it works fine for my use. I only use it about 7 or 8 times a year. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again if need arose. Selling for about $300 right now.

    Tiny tractor hay.

Around here all you do is call a guy that bales hay. He charges a fee per bale, round or squqre, he does it when you need it and all you have to do is put it in the barn. For 10 acres, I would not go to that expense and also have to worry about the maintenance and storage for that equipment...

Runs nice and dies in 20 min UPDATE UPDATE

Some New Hollands have an electric fuel shutoff solenoid. I am not familiar with that tractor, but.....just in case.

    steering wheel spinner knob

Sorry, but I wouldn't have one. If you ever get hit in the wrist with one after your front tires hit something, you won't want one either.

Something I don't understand about applications of below 40hp tractors

I grew up using a Farmall Model C, 23 HP, to pull a 2 bottom plow, 2 row cultivators, planters and anything else that needed being done. Also used a Ford 8N, 27HP, and pulled a 2 bottom plow in dry soil. As someone already mentioned, you either need a standard gear transmission for soil...

JD 1050 - LABOR COST for cleaning and reinstalling injectors?

I compared the price of cleaning injectors for an old JD and I decided to just buy new ones. No way I would pay that dealer to do anything. If you ask around or even check craigslist you can find mechanics that are looking for work. They are much cheaper and if you get some recommendations, you...

    which sanding pads?

You might want to find the detailed description of those discs you show. They look like what I use to get paint and rust off of metal. Get you an orbital sander and 80 grit for the first go around and then 220 to smooth it out for staining or paint. Recommend stain. It does a better job of...

Can all tractors flip over easy?

I agree with everyone regarding the flipping of a tractor. I once was trying to move a mobile home with a Farmall C. I let out the clutch and was looking behind me to see the home move. When I turned around the front of the tractor was 4 feet in the air. I immediately stepped on the clutch and...

    grease gun

I bought the lock-n-lube and it works fine. I like the tip that locks on to the grease zerk. I didn't think the price was that bad after comparing it to other brands. I considered buying a battery powered, but I don't use my equipment enough to justify it.

face mask for mowing tired of the dust?

I recommend the 3M 8511 because it has the breathing filter in the middle of it and it won't fog your glasses. Northern tools sells them and I use it anytime I drive the tractor or use the push mower or weed whacker. Inexpensive and really helps.

Can a propane tank be repurposed?

Most sprayers that I am familiar with do not have the contents in a pressurized tank. They have a pump to increase the pressure for spraying. That way the container can be plastic or some other light weight material and it can easily be carried in a backpack sprayer or just by hand. Around here...

Guy uses fake check to steal Massey tractor...recognize him?

That was probably not his first visit to the dealer or even other dealers in the area. I would be asking about video footage from every dealer in the area and if you find any, it might have a license plate visible. Also check with Big Tex trailer sales in the area. That looks like a fairly new...

Stuck knife head bolt — sickle bar cutter

One guess is that the bracket on the right has worn a groove into the bolt just below the head and it has mushroomed. That's why it won't slide to the right. I would probably cut it off with an angle grinder or hack saw and then pry it out from the left as previously suggested.

    What would you do ?

I'd probably just pay someone to do it. By the time you pay for the fuel and consider your labor, its almost a wash. Go for a visit and see what she can tolerate till a later date. I am in the same boat as you here in San Antonio. I do a little in the morning and in the evening, but in the...

6ft Rotory Tiller not getting job done

I would never use a tiller first on that type of soil. Another thing I consider is the moisture in the soil. If it has not been plowed or cultivated for years and its very dry, I will probably wait for the right moisture and then plow it first. If it was worked in the past year, might use the...

Compact Tractor Dealers Ignore Two-thirds of Their Potential Website Customers, Industry Survey Shows

I believe there is no question that the dealers must demonstrate good customer service and that means being responsive to emails. In 2003, I was looking for a new Ford F250, but I was looking for a particular truck. The local dealer did not have one and after about 2 months, I stated looking on...

Do you take it to the dealer for maintenance or do it yourself.

I have past experience as an auto mechanic, so I do most of the maintenance on my JD 830 and JD 2020 myself, regardless of what it is. I had a JD 4020 and needed the injection pump rebuilt. I didn't feel like trying it. I asked around and found a local fella that retired from John Deere...

Any way to weld the thin metal on tractors and attachments?

I'm always patching rust holes or damage on tractor sheet metal. Tractor sheet metal is usually thicker than 18 gauge, which is what just about all cars use, so its easier to weld. I use my MIG welder on it with 24 gauge wire. Sometimes I use acetylene. Battery boxes on a JD 4020 were 16 gauge...

We should just stop buying new products.

I called the Ford dealer in San Antonio to ask when I could bring my F250 in for an electrical issue. The lady asked what year the truck was. I told her its a 2003. She said, "We don't work on anything more than 10 years old." That tells you where ford and probably all the auto dealers are...

Can NOT get trailer lights to work

My 2003 Ford F250 was acting the same way with my trailer. I eventually discovered the problem was with a connector under the rear of the truck. That is where the pigtails that go to the trailer connectors on or near the back bumper connect to the main power going to all the trailer connectors...

Harbor Freight Tools that don't suck

I bought a Pittsburg Automotive ball joint separator. First time I used it the fork opened up and was useless. Large floor jack (don't recall model) worked well for about a year. Began leaking down so took to get repaired. Was told they couldn't repair a Harbor Freight jack because of the...

    What if....?

I seldom get into these discussions, but I found this one interesting. It reminded me of my brother who told me that when he was hauling cattle to the auction every year, it was lots of work. He had to pen and load the cattle. They would crap and urinate in the trailer which was corrosive to...

Ford 9N - Retrieve it or Leave it?

Just to add my 2 cents, I can assure you it will need wheels also. On tractors of this age, the rust has eaten through the rims and that's another $250. I have an 8N now that I wish I hadn't bought. I bought it for $300 and now am $1600 into it and its still not running. I haven't even tested...

    8N hood repair

The last one I fixed the fenders on I just folded in the outer edge rather than put a round rod. I just wanted to give it some strength and make it more rigid. It worked fine.

John Deere 2020 Pops out of Reverse

Am I understanding correctly that all of these possible fixes require splitting the tractor? A local mechanic told me I just had to remove the rockshaft cover. Would that give me any access to these problems?

John Deere 2020 Pops out of Reverse

Can anyone tell me if there is a part that can bend or wear out and not put the tractor all the way into reverse and can I get to that part without splitting the tractor? Sometimes it stays in reverse for a good while, but sometimes it pops out as soon as I let out the clutch. I think it feels...

    John Deere 2020 Throttle

Does anyone know how part #25 comes off the shaft on the JD throttle for the early model tractor? From the picture I think it just pulls out of #23, but mine won't budge and I am not sure if I am missing something. It shows a snap ring # 29, but I can't find it and have no idea where it is or...

74 John Deere 830 Hydraulic lift won't go up

I tried the L/D lever. No affect. When lowering the cover into place, I put the follower, #9, against the the lever, #4. I put it between the 2 sides of the lever. I hope that makes sense. I won't be working on it this morning. I have a med appt, so I will tackle it later. Thanks for your...

    John Deere 830 Loaders?

1 I don't have a hose on it now, but the hose was running from the back of the valve to the bottom of the same valve. That is where you see the two shiny caps now. This is a picture from the rear of the tractor. Right side.

74 John Deere 830 Hydraulic lift won't go up

I am trying to resolved this problem with the 3 point lift. If anyone has any experience, I would appreciate a little help. I don't think the front pump is getting oil from the rear pump and I am not sure what can be obstructing it. I removed the cap to the filter relief valve, but I can't pull...

Old but New Member in South Texas

I grew up on a farm and now that I am retired, I fool around with tractors a little just for fun. I currently have a JD 830 and a Ford 8N I am working on. I will be researching and reading as much as I can. Seems like there are lots of experienced people on this blog.
