They are both solid units. I drove both, and ended up with the 4820 obviously. The 494 does have a larger foot print, quite a bit longer actually. The 4820 is noticeably more compact

But what did it cost to generate that bill? Last I was approached, they wanted almost $30k... In ten years... That $30k, is actually $60k. So, to break even, Id need to save $6000 per year, over a 10 year period. That is the math problem I have with it, as I don't spend that on...

Yes, we freeze for 48 hours min, then store in plastic tubs in the barn over winter. Works like a charm. Never had wax moth infest them. The stuff on the stand was a little ring of waterproof grease to dissuade ants from crawling up on a couple colonies then they were weak

That is incredible. At those rates, charging an EV at home, is the same as $3/gal gas. This is why solar and geothermal were not fiscally viable here. I can see the government regulating the hell out of certain industries to make the "alternatives" more viable in the eyes of the consumer

Yes, pay per job, not hourly. Imagine having someone bid to frame a house, says it will take him 6 months, so he bids it to be a half years income for him... VS bidding the job, which is really a couple weeks of work for a regular crew.

    Rototilling price per hour

And I think you are right. If it takes you 4+ hours, you should be paid $200 for it. I'm just saying most people won't pay $200 for 1/8 acre to be tilled. The job being done is worth maybe $50-$100... The fact it takes you longer with your equipment doesn't make the job worth more, even...

One hour min at $200 seems steep for most small gardens. Heck, it may be a couple passes and 15 minutes of work. I’d probably look into the minimum being a stopping fee, to load, travel unload etc… and that minimum also cover say the first 30 minutes. Then have an hourly fee above that. This...

I also use ANR… it’s so quiet. When I was a kid I did hours of tillage with an open station Farmall 826 with the big box radio set to max in front of me. I don’t want to know how many DB that was…. But back then I loved it
  123. CloverKnollFarms

    Branson/TYM

Are the lights and speakers standard? Truly I cant listen to speakers over the sound of the tractor at PTO rpm
  124. CloverKnollFarms

    Branson/TYM

Hell my ROPS non ballasted 4820 is 5800lbs with the tiller on the back. I use the tiller a lot, and it's very compact weight added to the rear

    Student Loan Debt?

I had a neighbor who drove a $50k truck, didn't need to. Was always buying crap. His three car garage was filled with things he would just buy and store. No room for his cars. Kids had to get loans... Choices.
  126. CloverKnollFarms

    Student Loan Debt?

The amount most spend on new cars during their childs lifetime, would pay for a lot of secondary education. It's just not really a priority for most parents. New cars and vacations are though

    New MT573

It's a physical switch. Before proximity sensors, we had them on the landing gear on the aircraft. In the cold we wouldnt get gear down or up indications. Poor design for cold and outdoor use. Proximity sensors don't have this mechanical weakness.

I’m balking at $800 for a set of tires. I don’t think I could stomach twice that. Rebuilding my rear drums for $100 this week. Had a rear cylinder leaking and it wreaked havoc on the drum internals and shoes. So Im going above and rebuilding both sides and flushing the brake fluid for the...

Kubota L4802 vs Mahindra 5145 - Kubota $10k more, less functional?

Because that is what the salesman has told them. And it must be true. DPF has been around for what, less than 10 years? And people make claims based on what? Experience? Statistics? We have less than 10 years of real data 🤣. Just like "safe and effective". There is no real data, just a...

    Investing for beginners

Active investors rarely outperform an index fund. You can... But most people just chase returns and suffer from FOMO
  139. CloverKnollFarms

    Ready for the NEW models?

Out of reach for the common man. And most of us don't do simple orchard or row crop with small units. Automation for a compact tractor seems almost entirely useless.
  140. CloverKnollFarms

    Branson/TYM

Yeah, in a few years… pre tier 4 will not be an option. A non ECM tier 4 will take its place as the most reliable power plant. And there is only one. LS can keep their EGRs and sensors and limp mode. If you have fuel and a glow plug, the Branson will run.
  141. CloverKnollFarms

    Branson/TYM

I don’t do loader work at this point, if I began pulling a furrow plow, yeah I may ballast it. I don’t think people realize how heavy these things are.
  142. CloverKnollFarms

    Branson/TYM

I don’t buy, to sell... And the selling point of a Kukje diesel, is the same selling point for a pre tier 4 tractor. I plan to run this tractor as long as I’m physically able, so resale is not an issue. It’s not an investment, it’s just a tool. And seeing as though it’s the ONLY non ECM tier...
  143. CloverKnollFarms

    Branson/TYM

No. I also don’t have ballasted tires, which would provide more weight. It is a stock, no ballast unit and I don’t have traction issues. Someday I’ll probably fill the rear tires, but at this time I don’t see the need. I’ve also never needed to use the FWD.
  144. CloverKnollFarms

    FUEL GUAGE.

Is it always in dry storage? It could be as simple as the gauge is inop. Could be a sending unit in the tank, or the actual gauge.

LS XR4145 blown head gasket at 610 hours?

They are still less than a tier 4... I've been shopping 45-55hp tractors regularly for two years and never seen a pre tier 4 selling for more than the NEW model... ever. I'm happy to be corrected, I've just never seen that. Hell he could buy a mechanical injected tier 4 and still have a pre...

Kioti we're all faded and had a lot of surface rust on the lots. Rear transmission and axle carriers seemed less robust. You know how you can mount a tractor and drive it and it just feels solid? I didn't get that from the Kioti. I came close to buying an NX until I saw they had a known...

    474 v 494

I think the issue with the repair in question is that they are not using a stock part. They aren't replacing it with something it was not delivered with. I hear your concern though, none of us want down time. When I need to till and plant, I have a window of time. Not 6 months
  150. CloverKnollFarms

    474 v 494

To be fair I've heard of TWO instances of the front axle issue. Only on the 494 as I recall. None on the beloved 474
  151. CloverKnollFarms

    Branson/TYM

Both are really fully optioned tractors. The /20 models have a smaller footprint and all of the weight of the 494/574. The /20s are the heaviest built units in their class considering their size. The /20 hydros also have a 4 range transmission in lieu of the 3 range on the 494/574. They are...

LS XR4145 blown head gasket at 610 hours?

This is the main reason I went with TYM. None of this ******** on the motor. That's hard to swallow, $15k...? I'd find it hard to justify that and not just buy a nice pre tier 4

Solis SV24 Electric tractor - Here is what we know so far...

That is a consideration. People seem to be very guarded about the cost of the battery in these units. I can look at the cost of an engine at any time. CNH still will not publish an MSRP for the tractor they are currently selling that is electric. Why? Everything is shrouded in secrecy
  157. CloverKnollFarms

    474 v 494

Yes, per TYM the 4820 is wider (more stable) than the 474. The 494 is even larger, with basically the same weight as the 4820. Every part on the 4820 is built heavier, in a smaller package, than the 494. Ive driven all three, but was surprised at how much more compact the 4820 is compared to...

Are tractors and equipment a good investment right now?

Well, the wife will pay the bills while I carve out a hobby that provides fun money. Already educating myself on business, deductions, depreciation etc…. Tired of flying airplanes all week and never sleeping in my own bed.
  159. CloverKnollFarms

Are tractors and equipment a good investment right now?

Not a business. I will be starting a business in the coming 12-24 months, which will then allow me to use 179 to depreciate my new equipment moving forward.
  160. CloverKnollFarms

Are tractors and equipment a good investment right now?

Over time, my tractor will pay for itself. It is a durable good, and if cared for, will never be worth $0. If my use outpaces depreciation, Im ahead. The longer I own it, the better my financial situation will be. Last year alone I spent about 10 hours tilling fields that are used for honey...

    474 v 494

The 474 seems to have a great following and very happy users. The 4820 is similar in footprint, but with more weight and higher capacities. The 4820 is a chunky little tractor, probably the heaviest in its class when you consider its footprint. It is 14” smaller in length than the 494, but it...
  162. CloverKnollFarms

    474 v 494

The rear axle housing is about 50-75% less bulky. There is a lot of material in the /20 series rear end.
  163. CloverKnollFarms

    474 v 494

They don’t come with remotes… that’s all that is missing really. They have a nicer transmission with a 4 range hydro that shifts like butter. They have auto throttle, economy PTO etc. They are fully optioned, but the remotes are extra. The /20 series units are a smaller footprint than the 494...

Actually had a pitch trim run away in one of our aircraft due to a similar issue. A fastener in the control column rubbed away the insulation on a wire and shorted the pitch trim switch. The Branson legacy models have a different ignition location, so this shouldn’t be an issue on the /20...

I mean, I doubt resale is any better on a smaller unit. Some people want a smaller unit, some see the value in capacities and weight. I bought a 4820 and not a 4815 because I see the value in weight, stability, larger operator platform and capacity. So, in my case, the 4815’s smaller size was...

I’d get the 494. The larger frame will give more weight and better stability. The operator platform is really spacious too. Not sure how to answer the finish mower question. To mow what? The lawn? A tractor this size would be a poor choice for lawn mowing. If I’m maintaining less finished...

Of the three, I’d go with the Yanmar. I would have liked to, but they have poor dealer support in these parts. I went the TYM route to avoid the complexity of an ECM controlled engine and fault codes I can’t read without a dealer tool. They are the only ones selling a modern tractor without...

    Kukje/TYM vs Everybody else

It does make you wonder why other engines have so much unnecessary complexity built in. Complexity equates to failure points. If you can do all of this in a Kukje diesel without the added complexity and expense, then why add it at all? Our Farmall 826 still runs. It has had a hard life as...
