If you have a loader, put the bucket down level and raise the front axle off the ground so the tires are off the ground. In 2wd, backing up should not turn the front wheels. Now in 4wd, the same procedure should show you the front tires turning, even though they are off the ground.

If that's what is actually going on, then it could be bolt stretch or a bent axle mount. A few comments about 2 bolts not sufficient to hold the axle properly. Would be pulled off the tranny end because if the axle end, it would flop around with loud noises.

Because of it's age, the plastic fuel pickup hose in the tank can/does crack. It's enough to stop fuel suction when gas goes below the crack. If the fuel level is low, add some more in order to get fuel above the crack. If it then sucks gas and start's, Bingo !
