Is anyone else missing the magic of a land plane over a box blade?

One disadvantage with my box blade version is that whatever grade the tires are at is what the blade will create. In other words, it can be tricky to make a 2% grade if the tires are at 3 or 4 degrees when beginning. That's one reason I made the 3-way blade, which can be adjusted accordingly...

Is anyone else missing the magic of a land plane over a box blade?

Something like this? Everything is pinned or bolted onto a regular box blade, and with the receiver tube on the tongue I can use whatever length 2" square extension I want. As long as I have enough hose length. Also converted a 3-way blade to a puller version, using the same basic concept.

Bucket work with clutch /shuttle Vs hydro.

I absolutely hate having to slip a clutch. That's why I put a creeper kit in the M6040. Not that it's used often, but it sure comes in handy at times.

Bucket work with clutch /shuttle Vs hydro.

After starting with a small stick shift Kubota I thought it was great, compared to a shovel and wheelbarrow, but quickly learned to dislike the standard transmission. Especially for loader work. Got a larger Kubota with hydro shuttle and think it's great. But, when getting another small Kubota...

Is anyone else missing the magic of a land plane over a box blade?

After trying to bring the gravel back up to the surface of the driveway for years, using a heavy rear blade rotated 180 degrees and at about a 30 degree angle, some gravel resurfaced and there was a bit of a crown. Thought about adding more gravel, but decided to get a 7-foot land plane...

The one thing that you wonder why you didn't buy sooner?

A former neighbor bought the best fire rated safe he could find, for a somewhat reasonable price, and put it in a steel shipping container on his well cleared property. Well, a fire finally came through (this particular SoCal area was well overdue), and...everything in the safe got ruined...

A few years ago my girlfriend was talking to a friend in the L.A. area about shopping. I have three Trader Joe's within six miles, he said. Yes, she responded, I have to go about 100 miles to get to one - but I can get there faster.

Your second guess is correct. Thankfully a friend of mine moved to the area years ago, and after visiting him a couple of times I realized that this is a great place. I don't know what my Titan forks are rated at, but they do handle 2,600 lbs. on a pallet, even at the far end of the 60" ones. Have obviously done stupid stuff with them, too, but not trying to fling out roots. Not yet anyway.

Well, it helps to pay attention when using them, much like when using the tractor in general, and the M6040 does have adequate lifting capacity to use all of the 60 inches. I dunno. When dealing with the 1-1/4 diameter bolts that hold the loaders in place on my backhoes, I think the effectiveness of the penetrating oil can be crucial. Those bolts are also pretty much a worst case scenario, being threaded in from the bottom and then having about an inch worth of...

Probably for the same reason as why the drain plug is underneath: Gravity. The Pentastar V6s have their filters on top, which ensures an empty filter at each startup. Buying Advice Diesel smog emission stuff?

Our BX25D does indeed have enough power to operate the backhoe. Sort of. On the occasions I use it, the times that the power is lacking are far fewer than that the little thing doesn't weigh enough to use the power. And the tiny loader bucket holds so little than power isn't an issue then...

Dump trailer, would a jump box help?

To live long and happy lives, those two batteries should be the same make, model, and specs, and ideally have come off the assembly line one after the other. That doesn't really matter while they're being charged, but when not, the weaker battery will take the better one down to its level.

Neither one is even comparable to a skid steer, I think. If mine didn't have the remote quick tach lock it'd be gone by now. The one extra step to get in and out of the M6040 (with a cab) isn't that much more work than the single step on the L3800. And when it's 75-80 degrees out, the A/C is...

As mentioned, it seems to be a very rare occurance. Better yet, it's painfully simple to eliminate the potential issue. Disconnect the cable that feeds the solenoid, at the battery. But...but...then the engine won't start. Yes it will, but can run a bit rough for a second or two if it's -10...

I don't know much about those, but they seem like a superior alternative - if you want a 1/2-ton diesel. Had a '14 Ram 1500 for many years, by the way, a good little car. Had the V6 gasser and was probably the most boring car I've ever owned. Got about the same mileage as an Ecodiesel, too...

They did, and not only as a mercy killing. Personally I don't quite understand 1/2-tons in the first place, even with good and reliable engines in them. They're nice riding cars, yes, but at the cost of painfully low payload. Worst, I think, are the unrealistic J2807 tow ratings, making people...

Adding Some Stability to a Small Yanmar Tractor

Any place that sells and/or makes good spacers. It doesn't really matter what they're for, but the measurements do matter, so have the correct bolt circle ready, and pilot hole size if you can use hub centric ones, when you call.

Replace hydraulic fluid based on time, not hours?

    Tractor idling

It seems like some engines have a combination of both. They'll do a regen based on time no matter what, but when the right (wrong?) parameters come up before the time based regen happens, they'll react to that. In the pickup world, those who use their diesels as intended (pull somewhat heavy...

There's a big difference between cold starting an engine, one that has sat for an extended period of time, and restarting one which has been shut off for only an hour or six. Oil doesn't magically disappear from the bearing surfaces when an engine is turned off. The oil film will remain for...

Best way to mount hydralic hookups for grapple

Needed a way to adjust the front blade angle on the tractor, made a simple bracket and welded two 45 degree fittings to it. Also used for the grapple these days. Same concept, but crude, this time with shaft collars holding the couplers in place. Used to run a snowblower on a backhoe/loader.

I've had that happen with the couplers for a grapple, once. So instead of pushing the male onto a flat surface, I had to use something that protruded enough to release the pressure on the flat faced version. Specifically, one of the serrations on the side of the rock bucket. As often as I...

The initial (50 hr) filter change on the M6040 taught me a lesson. For the next one I parked the tractor with as much of a side tilt as I dared, and lost a lot less fluid. It also helps to have a second magnet ready so time isn't spent on cleaning off the one that was in there.

Adapters are cheaper and easier than getting new hoses that fit. Especially if they have to be custom made for the purpose. There's nothing wrong with using quality adapters, and it looks like there was one already so it should only be a matter of using the correct one instead.

    Tractor idling

Unless there's something unusual about the Kubotas (I have an M6040) that I don't know about, two to three minutes should be plenty. For example, when stopping for fuel with the Ram 3500, which is always towing something (from 8K to 25K) at a typical gas station, the temps are already down...

Aside from not idling an engine if possible, I also don't start one unless it can be worked until the oil gets up to enough temp to burn off any condensation. 134. T

    Tractor idling

No engine likes to idle. But for some reason many think that it's okay to let diesels do it. That's probably because truckers used to do it while stopped for the night, to get heating or cooling. And those engines' piston rings weren't even made to seal at idle.

I would not admit to knowingly towing without trailer brakes on a public forum. And especially not with a 1/2-ton. As an aside, 7-8 mpg is about what my Ram 3500 gets when pulling 25,000 lbs. And that's in the Rockies. But even if it got only 3 mpg, the extra safety margin of the longer and...
