    tractor tipping question

It doesn't take much if an uneven load to cause the tractor to tilt. It is more about getting the leverage with the bucket in front of the front axles and a light rear end. There won't be an investigation if my tractor stays upright, and somebody else's tractor flips with the stock...

Question for aluma trailer owners with the coupler/tongue handle

I wouldn't stress over a $10 or $20 purchase. It is quite possible that the bolt holes on the trailer couplers are relatively standardized. However, I wish vendors would take the time to make the critical measurements so one could make sure it would fit before purchase. I bought my Aluma...

    What kind of apples?

When my parents planted their orchard, they intentionally chose a variety of apples that ripen from about mid August to mid October, I think. I don't remember all the varieties. The King and Gravenstein apples are some of the early ones, and somehow they got two different Gravenstein trees...

Yep, unintended things happen. And, I'd much rather balance the tractor on 2 front wheels than pop up a single rear wheel from an overloaded bucket and have the tractor tilt to the side and risk a rollover.

    tractor tipping question

The goal isn't particularly to be up on 2 front wheels. However, the issue that is common is when the front end is overloaded, a single rear wheel pops up and the tractor tips until it reaches the stop on the front axle. Without the axle stops, the tractor will almost always roll to one side...

You can lay the blame wherever you wish. However a bit of history... Tier 4 Emission Standards was adopted by the EPA in 2004 under George Bush (Republican), to be phased in from 2008 to 2015. The USA started phasing in ULSD in 2006 and 2007 under George Bush (Republican), which was a...

    tractor tipping question

Ok, a while ago I made these little axle blocks for my little Ford. The blocks helps the axle resist rolling, going between the factory stop and the axle. Pretty simple to make. Quick weld, and then drilling both the block and the axle stop on the tractor. A month or so I changed from my...

    tractor tipping question

Mobile home axles are designed to take a lot of weight. If the 3 pallets weigh less than 6,000 lbs, then it may be within what that trailer can carry. It really depends on how the trailer was made. Does it have springs? Were they bottomed out? I know my little Ford doesn't like heavy...

As far as the coal, there likely were big changes over the years. In the rural areas, perhaps there was a push to replace coal with heating oil. Easier, no mess. And in the cities, I imagine there was also a big push to get rid of the coal, and change over to the much "cleaner" natural gas...

Several variations. Some vehicles have the solenoid separate from the starter. My old AMC Hornet had a separate solenoid. I've seen it on other vehicles too, I think. My little Fiat 500 has a cable pull back to the starter, similar to my JD 440ic that has a rigid bar from the starter to the...

    Moving Equipment Long Distance

That may be a point that any trucker will want 2-way trips. So, if they have a trip from Tennessee to New York, they may well want to pick up a load from New York to Tennessee, and time both trips together. Of course a lot will depend on whether there is load/unload assistance at both ends of...

L4310 won't start - tried everything I can think of

Ok, perhaps some clarification. So, this is a generic starter motor photo. The whole unit is called the starter. The can on top is called the Solenoid. It's purpose is to switch the connection from the big wire from the battery (connection top right) to the starter (connection from...

    Moving Equipment Long Distance

I was talking to a hot shot trucker a while ago. Somewhere around 20,000 lbs was his cutoff. Anything bigger, and you will need a semi. Your list above should be OK, if it can get distributed on the trailer OK. Big wedge trailer?

    New $10,000 Toyota pickup

For the most part I'm happy enough towing with the stock RAM mirrors, although I'm mostly towing a flatbed, 7' wide bed, 8'6" wheels. I did try towing my nephew's travel trailer recently. My stock mirrors are just barely wide enough to peek around it, but it was annoying to back up by...

    New $10,000 Toyota pickup

Around 2000, one could still buy a new Ford Ranger for $9,995, I think. Then Ford decided to stop making the pickup. There have been smaller pickups from time to time. The VW Caddy, Chevy Luv, Ford Courier, Subaru Brat, etc. However, most of those have been gone since the mid 1980's in the...

    New $10,000 Toyota pickup

For off-roading the Toyota might be OK. Not a huge engine, but how big do you really need? The older compact Toyotas were quite popular off roaders with a few mods The Roxur is apparently only being sold for off road, and would be difficult to license for on road. Now you can purchase an...

    Moving Equipment Long Distance

Driving one following the other may not be as bad as driving completely apart. Although if you're expecting your wife to be pulling a trailer with your pickup, then she would have to be comfortable driving the rig. Modern GPS navigation is nice. After using GPS on phones for about 20 years...

    Moving Equipment Long Distance

Ahhh, I was thinking of the small square balers that are very wide. At least the older side feed ones. I tried to get a car shipped from Detroit to Oregon. Looked up "car shipping" on Google. Sent an E-mail to someone advertising on Google as a shipper, and got 100 responses from "brokers"...

    Moving Equipment Long Distance

Shipping a baler long distance may be a problem. If you're towing them on the built in two wheels, they're overwidth. OK to some extent for agricultural, but potentially a pain for commercial haulers. And, if you have a hot shot trucker, are you asking them to leave their trailer home? How...

    New $10,000 Toyota pickup

If you have a big farm, you might be able to sneak it in for off road use only. However, licensing it would be a major hassle. There is a 25 year (classic/vintage) exception that won't help with this Toyota until about 2050. However, many Japanese pint sized pickups have been brought in under...

Take the truck my boss says

Is that a 1500 series or 2500 series? Grab a half a dozen big kids off of the street, and offer them $10 each to ride in the back of your pickup as ballast.

    Moving Equipment Long Distance

I've had really bad experiences with so called "trucking companies" who just seemed to be brokers that really wanted to write contracts, but had no trucks, and no plan to actually pick up the load. A very odd business model, but it is no skin off their backs if they write a bunch of contracts...

    case 310 dozer diesel

Do you have an exact model, or year of the dozer? I assume you have a clutch on the engine, as well as two steering clutch/brakes. My John Deere 440ic has a "reverser". A lever that you pull back to change it from 5 forward, 1 reverse to 4 reverse and 1 forward. Or, sends you in the...

L4310 won't start - tried everything I can think of

If you connect the positive from the battery to the place where that wire was connected to on the starter, it should make the starter turn. Either a wire direct from the battery, or from where the large battery wire connects to the starter. If your starter turns, and perhaps starts the...

L4310 won't start - tried everything I can think of

The first thing to do is to jump across the solenoid. I.E. From the positive at the starter to the switched point on the solenoid. It can be done with either a screwdriver, or a short piece of wire. I've got an older Kubota 4310. Different issues, but it starts right up even without a key.

Does anybody build custom trailers anymore?

If you want to go "custom", then write up the specs you want. Length x Width of bed Weight Capacity Frame material (steel/aluminum) Bed material (2x6 or 2x8 or 2x12, plywood, metal, expanded metal, etc) Bed Design (flatbed, open tracks, side rails, etc). Tires and Wheels. Tandem, Dually...

    Tar River?

Do you have a bucket on your tractor? I have a bucket on my Ford 1715, plus forks. I've been using the tiller as rear ballast some, but it seems to handle fine empty, although I don't have it gummed up with grass and dirt.

What to watch out for on a 1950s John Deere crawler/loader?

Oh, another thing to keep in mind. The Dozer probably is supposed to have a 6V battery (you can still buy them). Mine came with a 12V battery. It would run, but the gages were all bananas, and I think it damaged the pull contact on the starter. One can officially "convert" to 12V. I'm...

What to watch out for on a 1950s John Deere crawler/loader?

As far as the bucket. Mine (440IC) has an ATCO bucket. Every photo I've seen of similar crawlers has a different bucket or blade. I assume many tractors and crawlers of that age were sold as a base model, and had attachments like blades and buckets added. My bucket has a lot of cast steel...
