Depends on your application. I would prefer 1st cutting hay for reseeding a lawn but straw for a garden. As for cost, if I had "mulch" hay it will be the same price as 1st cutting. Tracks are the way to go. Amish use them when I did custom silage bales. They will not tear up the field. I use wheel one around farm. Much much faster loading customers than tractor and no clutch wear. Reach is the issue. Placing the 2nd layer bale centered is sometimes a 2 step process.

If homeowners would not fertilize their yards I bet they would realize that a lot of the waterways pollution is not all farmer related. Though you would never hear that. Everything is the fault of the person that respects the land the most.

You would be correct that finding a 2x40 w/mfwd would be uncommon as it wasn't an option. However, maybe you are referring to your general area but finding a 2x50/55 w/mfwd is just as easy as finding one without.

I regularly get 3 on several of my fields and even 4 but mother nature wasn't allowing that last year. Several years ago I did 5 on one field just to say I did. We do both baleage and dry, that makes it little easier. Baling dry in November, now that's rare.

Get a dumpster or drive to township and use township dumpsters. I only burn paper products if needed.
