    Cabs

A coat is much more economical and doesn’t add non-productive weight.

    Spreader or sprayer?

I have never needed herbicide in the grass. Maybe I’m lucky or just not as worried about “weeds.” Healthy grass that’s not mowed too short will generally outcompete weeds.

    Fencing my property

A single wire isn’t a fence and if a person or animal gets hurt tripping over it or worse get’s clotheslined you could be liable. You might want to put hi-vis flags on it (like you would on electric), or just take it down. The property line is the property line, even if unmarked.

    Fencing my property

Why would your neighbor need to talk to you about having his property surveyed and marked?

    "Sharpened" the bush hog blades

Yep. I’ve never taken the blades off a rotary cutter. Very easy to sharpen in place.

    "Sharpened" the bush hog blades

Exactly. The “blades” are not meant to be sharp, but slightly rounded.

Deere 2720 Smoke issue at startup

My tractor has been smoking at startup since i bought it 11 years ago. I don’t worry about it. It runs great.

    Regen delete kit

One day the US will look like Cuba, with old cars and old equipment everywhere because it still works, people can maintain it and it doesn’t need “software updates.”

    Chain sharpening woes.

I don’t sharpen chains. I replace them. I use maybe 5 a year and my time is too valuable to mess around trying to sharpen chains.

Who actually makes the tractor and whose engine and transmission does it carry?

Buy an established brand from a local dealer with a good service and parts department and don’t worry about where all the parts come from.

    Metal building with no gutters?

Many colonial homes and buildings used “ground gutter”. As long as water can’t pool against the building you’re fine.

Making a pond questions, mainly keeping mosquitos from breeding

The number one thing is water turnover or moving water. If you get plenty of rain and you have an overflow you should be alright.

Yep. Sounds lie that's exactly what they're proposing to do, create a cesspool.

    Rural Internet & Cell Phones

Most areas of the US have at least voice cell phone service, and you have to get pretty far from the interstate to not get enough data for email and messaging. This assumes you're using ATT or Verizon. Some of the discount carriers, you're lucky if you can browse the web even in large cities. I...

Proposed update to front porch forum rules

I have no interest in a Twitter clone here. If it's not about rural life / hobby farms / farm equipment, I don't want to wade through it on this site.

    Don't be this guy

Spot on! I’m not buying anything else that is going to require maintenance unless it’s replacing an existing piece of equipment. There’s too much I want to do already and not enough days left.
  18. Bill Guenthner

    Don't be this guy

Nothing. If I don’t really think I’ll use something in the next year or two I throw it away or give it away or sell it. Too many people will build a $30k building to house $3k worth of junk. And then they get to pay property tax on it forever.

    Mowing Large acreage mowing

It’s cheaper in the long run to keep a field cut then to let it get overgrown and weedy. Not only do you have to mow briars and small trees but the grass will thin and require a lot of seed and fertilizer to put right again.

    Netflix Raising prices during Covid

Complain? It’s either worth the price to you or it isn’t. We used to pay $3 or $4 to rent DVDs. It doesn’t take much watching to get your money’s worth from a streaming service. But hey, if you think it isn’t a value for you then by all means cancel. There’s a bunch of stuff I’m not buying...

    Netflix Raising prices during Covid

It’s super easy to cancel Netflix, Hulu, HBOMax. It takes about 5 seconds on-line. I start and stop them all the time.

Do you take it to the dealer for maintenance or do it yourself.

Good luck finding a competent repair facility.

    Cleaning Up Substantial Yard Debris

You make a good point. There’s liable to be more than meets the eye. It might be better to remove the most visible and let nature take the rest

    Cleaning Up Substantial Yard Debris

It’s just sad that people treated the land like that. I have a similar (thought not nearly as large) situation. People need to realize that they cannot “own” the land, they can only be it’s caretaker for future generations.

How paranoid should I be? i have a bandaid over the camera and mic of my lap top. Is this crazy?

“Maybe she did searches, but I didn't.” From the perspective of the advertisers everyone connected to the internet service in your house is one source of information. I search “gas grill” and may wife starts getting ads for gas grills, because we share an IP address.

Owner Dissatisfied With Deere Wants To Switch To Kubota

I’m pretty happy with my 10 year old Kubota tractor and I run it hard. My JD mower on the other hand has been nothing but trouble and disappointment since day one, despite being a ‘commercial’ model and pretty pricy.

How paranoid should I be? i have a bandaid over the camera and mic of my lap top. Is this crazy?

It’s a little bit crazy. I have been writing code and building computer systems for over 30 years. The only reason to cover the camera is in case YOU accidentally shared your video. Contrary to popular misconception your phone isn’t listening to your conversations. If you get an ad for something...

I feel like Steve Martin in, "The Jerk"

I was able to assign my own and I went with the house number where Google Maps said I was. It's spot on that way.

    Saving Money as Prices Increase

One thing you can do for next year is start saving your own seeds. Seeds are crazy expensive. We save seed every year, marigold, zinnia, sunflowers, pumpkins, squash, okra. You can also plant things like beans from the bag in the pantry. I planted black beans that way and it worked perfectly.

Pushing A Tractor To It's Limits

This is why I will never buy a used tractor. Too many people try to use them as dozers or excavators. Maybe it's got "low hours" but if most of those hours were pulling tree stumps and exceeding the weight limits...

    Carbon Dioxide

There is no way to know that. No one was testing parts per million of CO2 before the industrial revolution. And no, they can't tell from ice cores or tree cores. We're still in the warming phase coming out of the last ice age with still a way to go. In any case it's all good. More CO2 is good...

Hydro Tractor Size for Pulling Water Wagon

Horsepower is not what matters. If you try to move/stop an 8000lb trailer with a 1500lb tractor you are asking for trouble. This is pickup truck work. Go buy and old beat up farm truck. Then you have a also bed for tools, accessories, etc.

55 Acres, Wooded, Hilly, and Snowy!

Good to hear. My property is very challenging terrain and there are parts of it that I’ve had my tractor on that are way too tippy and I will not be returning to which makes it harder to keep the trails open but hey, it’s all useless if I wind up killing myself.

    Land Clearing Project

Yeah, but you still have a pile of trees and a bunch of holes. A forestry mulcher just turns it all into compost and leaves a nice level finish.

    Land Clearing Project

Yep. Spent years hacking away, burning, renting chippers and stump grinders, then finally found someone in my area that does forestry mulching. Acres of scrub trees and probably 30 or 40 decent-sized stumps gone in two days. He even ground up two large slash piles. Worth every penny I paid. Your...

    Seat Safety Switch - SOLUTION

definitely need a way to stand while using the forks and when hitching the FEL implements. No. You don't. Seated with a belt on if the tractor is moving. Everyone who was ever killed in an industrial accident thought he had a good reason for ignoring safety.

55 Acres, Wooded, Hilly, and Snowy!

If this is your first tractor you would be better served by getting a smaller tractor and some seat time. It is really easy to kill yourself with a tractor on rough terrain, especially when carrying or towing. Any size tractor is going to be a huge improvement over no tractor and no matter how...

Rotary Cutter (easier to work on)??

I have a Big-Bee Agri Five rotary cutter (60 inch) that has given good service and taken a lot of abuse for 6 years but... it is not a pleasure to work on. There are no holes in the deck to access the bolts that attach the blades to the stump jumper so when they loosen up it's tremendously...

    5 ft rotary cutter choices

I bought one of these Big Bee cutters 5 years ago. I don't make any effort to take care of it. I abuse it. I cut stuff that's way too big. I store it outside. I hit stumps and rocks all the time. It just keeps working. I managed to bend the tailwheel fork after hooking it on a stump one too...

    Stump grinding / removal

I have a large wooded tract for recreation and hunting. I've got an acre or so that we clear cut several years ago and now it has a good stand of grass on it but the stumps are still there, about 30 stumps anywhere from 6 inches to 30 inches but mostly under 20 inches diameter. I want to get...

    3-Point Hitch  PTO lever positions

On the B3200 and B3300 the PTO engagement lever has three positions; un-engaged then one with a picture of the tractor and the PTO shaft and then one with a picture of just the turning PTO shaft. What's the difference between the two engaged positions? I can't tell any difference in operation of...

    Need advice on new compact

I have 35 acres, 33 is wooded. Mostly uneven and rocky. Currently mow the 2 acres of grass with a JD x300 but it's very hard on the riding mower. I want to convert another acre or two to grass. Most of my tractor work will be in the woods making paths, deer plots, moving downed trees, also...
