PTO speed

My Zen-Noh (Yanmar) YM1500D has two PTO speeds, 540rpm and 1000rpm at 2000rpm engine speed. What I don't know is what direction on the PTO lever is 540, forward or back. They look the same to me when running. Can anyone tell me?
