    Model Year Identification

Here's a weird one RE TYM serial numbers. I just purchased a new 4820 that my local dealer had ordered and received from TYM (not a dealer to dealer exchange). Its serial number is SFJX00001 (?!?) It has been my experience that the first part of a VIN/SN identifies the model and/or place of...

    dumb question about HST

Well, I finally picked up a new tractor - a 4820 that had just come in. That tractor should be a great replacement for the old Case/IH that I use with a 7' finish mower or 6' bush hog. 4820 was (compared to other brands) relatively inexpensive, and I was happy to find out that TYM was offering...

    Old dad

Yes, for ease of maintenance and use, it's hard to beat a golf cart. A friend of mine gave me a 1971 Melex in exchange for some work I did for him. I run three 12V lead acid batteries in it, and it works great for my needs.

Anyone have a MechMaxx 3-pt stump grinder?

This stump grinder might be a good option for gear drive tractors that don't have a sufficiently low creep gear.

    Natural gas?

I replied to your statement that sometimes the rent on tanks in your area is $0. My statement was a suggestion that it would be smart for any newbies considering accepting one of these "free" tanks to read the fine print. This suggestion was based on posts from several users on this form (not...

    Natural gas?

Thanks to the PSA by those that have been skewered on this list, one would do well to read the fine print very carefully to see if this "free" tank includes: 1. Prohibition to purchase propane from any other dealer (welcome to the captive market!) 2. Excessive charges to get out of the "free"...

    Natural gas?

This thread makes me feel like I'm in a bizarro world where nothing makes sense. 🤪 (I'm sure that this is just due to it being contrary to my own experience) Why is that? I have no idea what it costs to rent a tank, but IMO, renting *anything* should be limited to things you only need...
  8. S

    Natural gas?

That stinks. I'm sure it helps that there are several propane dealers in our area, so the competition helps. I hope you can swap in your own tank one of these days. I go through a couple 30 gallon portable propane tanks per year and wanted to be able to fill my own. My 500gal tank didn't...
  9. S

    Natural gas?

That is high. It seems that NG/LPG prices vary a lot from one place to the next. I had our propane topped off in July, and it was $2 per gallon. My parents house is heated by NG. We live in a neighboring state and our house (larger, with 3X the gas appliances) has LPG, and they spend more on...

    Natural gas?

We use propane for furnace, stoves and water heater. I have two tanks, but only use about 1/3 tank per year. I top off once per year, but could go quite a few years without a refill if needed. We live in a sparsely populated area, so if things break, we're the last to get fixed. As a result...

    dumb question about HST

Thanks Lou- Yeah, I don't even have a TYM tractor (yet), but was just wondering. New tractor will replace an old Case/IH. To shift that range selector, you have to fully engage clutch. stop. slow engine to idle. hold your tongue just right, and eeeeeease her into other range. And half the...

Anyone have a MechMaxx 3-pt stump grinder?

Thanks for those that have contributed to this thread. I've learned quite a bit. I'm looking at the MechMaxx TSG61: Look like a nice unit. I like that you can cut both directions.

    dumb question about HST

So I guess the follow-up question is: can you also shift ranges in geared (4-digit TYM) tractor with no clutch if shuttle and/or gear shift are in neutral? (assuming stopped, or very close)

    Aftermarket engine/trans/air filters for Branson/TYM?

When I see any mention of purchasing filters on this list, it is always about purchasing them from the dealer. I don't have a local dealer. Are aftermarket filters available for Branson/TYM? I assume that they are, but have I've never read about them on this list.

    dumb question about HST

    dumb question about HST

I had another question about HST vs gear, and it hit me to ask Google's AI, since it knows everything: (text above was highlighted by Google, with more info on each of the four items offered below the above text) After I read the above, I was thinking that HST is best for lower power...

    dumb question about HST

Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing something, somewhere, about a hi/lo within ranges. Sounds pretty nice. Most of my reading/looking has been on Branson/TYM tractors. Guessing those do not offer this or I would have read more about it...?

do YT3 and YM3 tractors have EGR?

Hi all- I'm looking to replace an old Case I/H utility tractor and the Yanmar YM3 tractors are on my short list. Wondering if these tractors have EGR? Lookint at the Yanmar Emissions web page, it looks like EGR is only on tractors over 75hp, but I thought I'd check here to be sure... TIA.

    Promising news on emissions requirements?!?

I'm reading today the particulate regulations will remain. It's the "greenhouse gas" regulations that are being rolled back. So I guess our DPFs are here to stay. :(

    Promising news on emissions requirements?!?

The recent EPA announcement has me thinking that there could be some good news in the compact tractor market before long. TYM would be in a good position to make some easy changes (swap DPF with muffler and remove small amount of extra sensors, etc), and I bet that they would do so if allowed...

    question for shuttle shift owners

I was able to "test drive" a used 5835 today. Although the seat was a bit low (easily fixed), the open station cockpit was plenty roomy. The Power Shift will take a little getting used to, but overall, I really liked it! 👍

    question for shuttle shift owners

On my recent test drive of the 5520, I thought that the throw on the F/R lever was a little longer than I would have liked and the lever felt kinda spindly (is that a word?). Continuing my search, I like the looks of (only seen on video) of Yanmar's sync-shuttle on their "simple" YM series of...

    dumb question about HST

On the subject of HST vs gear... In my search for a new tractor, I came across the Yanmar YT series. I have to say that I am impressed with the i-HMT trans they are running in those tractors. It appears to be the closest I've seen to "the best of both worlds" between HST and gear. 1. I like...

    question for shuttle shift owners

Thanks ptsg. I did get a message from my dealer that 5835s are no longer available, so I'll take a look at a 4058 if one shows up locally. One disappointment on 4058 is they have added "telematics" to a "proudly simple" TYM tractor. Yay! More computers, sensors, $$$, and now, a modem to...

    question for shuttle shift owners

Thanks for the feedback. It might work out that I take a second look at the 5520. I'm a hobby welder and could probably adjust and/or shorten the range select lever a bit. Even with that done, the small-ish operators station has me again considering the 5835. I had the chance to take one of...

    question for shuttle shift owners

Well, the 5520 dream is dead. 🤢 I looked at one in person this weekend and took it for a test drive. Gear shift felt pretty good. It was kinda stiff, but I bet it'll loosen up over time. 👍 Shuttle F/R lever was "ok". The killer was the cramped operator's station. I'd read that the 5520...

    question for shuttle shift owners

Hi all- At this point, my experience/knowledge about Branson tractors is limited to what I've read/seen online. Stumbled on a video that has me wondering... In this video (about 4:50 in): ... the RK37 owner complains about sloppy shift linkage and jumping out of gear. I think that the...

    dumb question about HST

If I had a tractor hitched to the back, the extra weight would probably prevent tires from spinning (especially so on pavement), so the extra torque would be used to accelerate the load. My tractors are set up to pull both bumper and gooseneck trailers from the FEL and 3-pt and I do use them...
  37. S

    dumb question about HST

I've never owned (or used) an HST tractor, so I have to ask this question: If you're going to "road" your tractor, do you start out in high range, or do you (depending on the load behind you) start in low , speed up, then shift on the fly into medium, speed up more, then shift on the fly into...

    dumb question about HST

I am so glad that I re-joined this list and asked some questions. I've owned my current tractors for 20+ years. My newest tractor is 40 years old. I first joined the list in 2002, but I left the list in 2005 and have remained largely clueless about HST tractors that have (it seems to me)...

    dumb question about HST

Speaking of the 4020 (and other JD tractors of that era), I've always thought it was pretty cool that the classic Nelson "rain train" sprinkler was obviously styled based on those JD tractors: Note the overhanging "brow" at the front end, followed by the looooong arched hood with the little...
  40. S

    dumb question about HST

Yeah, thanks. I do like the 4020, and will be keeping it. It'd just be nice to also be able to pull the Rhino mower behind the smaller tractor so I could trailer it more easily. In line with this thread on HST vs gears, I do have to admit that I do prefer a traditional 'H' pattern gear...

    dumb question about HST

My original plan was to use new tractor to replace an old Case/IH that I run a 7' finish mower with. Any config of Branson/TYM with "Kukje" engine would run that mower with ease... But as I've been looking online, I've come across others that have run 12' and 15' batwing mowers behind these...

  44. S

    dumb question about HST

Yes, good advice, but... I really, really, really want to buy a tractor with that good old mechanical injected Kukje/TYM engine. That engine tops out at 55 or 58hp. I wonder if I might end up down on power and/or have problems with HST running hot.

10-4. Since I've not read anything about a creeper gear on those two tractors, I guess it's time to cue the sad trombone: wah, wah, waaahhhhh..... 😄

    dumb question about HST

Thanks for your reply SR. Your last comment about creep gears and stump grinding caught my eye. I've been wondering about that very thing. I have two geared tractors (both 8-speeds), and although I've never used a PTO powered stump grinder, I would guess that low range, low gear in my...

    dumb question about HST

Thanks for the many informative replies. Good to read that HST tractors do in fact use gears to drive PTO. The lower PTO rating for HST not being due to how the PTO is driven, but instead is the result of the increased overhead of HST makes sense, but I hadn't thought of that. Of course there...

    dumb question about HST

Hi TYM/Branson gurus. A friend of mine is making some progress convincing me to give HST a try on next tractor. No doubt HST is a LOT better at the back and forth, but in some applications, it is not quite as good (for example: large, open field mowing). I'm having trouble doing the math to...

Yeah, I really hate to read about your troubles. Problems with emissions equipment is something I've never experienced (I run pre-emissions trucks and tractors), and don't want. I read somewhere recently about a TYM owner that had a couple of DPF errors pop up, and on his 2nd visit to the...

    TYM Warranty Disaster

With the DPF light being common to both your previous and current tractor, it sure makes me wonder if there is something going on with DPF. Every tractor I've owned has been old, big, and gets the job done at low rpm. I'm sure that it will be an adjustment to run a tractor over 2000rpm. By...
