    Good morning!!!!

2022-01-15, - 5 degrees right now. Think I'll be staying inside...reasonably warm since wifey is under blankets and I'm wearing a shirt-jac (I guess these are referred to as "shackets" now) Time for the flannel PJs though, I think...

    Good morning!!!!

For the most part, Margeaux is doing great...still have trouble with her peeing or crapping in the house (pretty much ruined the hall carpet) A very loving dog, but not much of a licker. The housebreaking problem is more our problem then hers. I can't get it through to my wife that dogs need a...

What kind of car do you have? Did the block heater come with it, or is it aftermarket?

    Good morning!!!!

Thanks!! Stepdaughter bought it, actually. Glass bottle with a cork, currently in the refrigerator We go through Jameson's fairly quickly (if you live with 2 women and are acting as a nurse for one, you'll understand why)...other liquor is just an occasional treat.

    Pallet Forks

My tractor has enough loader capacity, the effect of the pallet forks weight is negligible. The clamp-on forks really extend the load out and reduces the loader's lift capacity. Frankly, I don't see much use in clamp-on forks except to carry a couple bales of hay or something else pretty light...

    Good morning!!!!

Yeah, I wish cars and trucks still had wing windows too... My Toyota has cloth seats...not as pretty as leather, but not as cold in the winter or as hot and sticky in the summer. Thinking about it, there are times I'll idle more then 10 minutes if the windshield is really iced up. I tend to...
  14. RoyJackson

    Good morning!!!!

I park my truck outside. Warm up is normally 5-10 minutes...long enough to scrape any ice off the windshield You didn't ask, but I normally run the tractor at high idle (1500 RPM) for 15-20 minutes in weather like this. I prefer not to engage the PTO until it's warmed up
  15. RoyJackson

Snow Equipment Buying/Pricing Snowblowers: FEL Mount vs Rear Pull

Actually, it probably is a hydraulic FEL mount for that kind of money. Plus, the 4052 doesn't have a mid-PTO option available https://www.deere.com/assets/publications/index.html?id=49627863#4

    Good morning!!!!

I'm not a cat person, but they sure like me! Stepdaughter has two and I take care of the if she's away. I think they (the cats) look at me as "Mr. Treats"
  20. RoyJackson

    Pallet Forks

I have the Titan Attachment forks...it would take some serious abuse to destroy them. I limit mine to lift, as forks are intended. They'll easily handle anything I need to lift, which is normally well below the loader's capability (loader and tractor can handle >1 ton with proper ballast)
  21. RoyJackson

    Hooks on FEL Bucket

Center for light weight, two in-line with the loader arms for the heavier loads The two in line with the loader arms are used in conjunction to spread the load
  22. RoyJackson

    Pallet Forks

Better off, IMHO, with dedicated forks. I've read too many stories about folks' messing up their buckets using the clamp on forks. Mine are Titan attachments with a 42" forks. Quite well made (better than expected, actually)...downside is prices have really increased

TYM T474 vs John Deere 4044M

Can't say I've ever seen that... I'm sure most imported tractors are "knocked down" for ease of shipment...knocked down meaning some components such as wheels/tires are not mounted...I reckon other components too, but not certain about that. So, Deere assembles CUTs from components (such as...

I've read number of Deere ads...never saw any of that nonsense. Care to post something to substantiate? Deere is a multi-national company...you can see Deere tractors world-wide, with the possible exceptions of China, Russia and some smaller countries. Deere sells a lot in Europe, India and...

TYM T474 vs John Deere 4044M

All the 40xx series use Yanmar engines...the older 4x20 series used Deere Powertech engines. Justification was it was easier to make the Yanmar engines Tier IV compliant. I had a 4520, currently have a 4052R. Biggest difference I see is the Powertech engines had more torque. That said, the...

TYM T474 vs John Deere 4044M

Not unusual though...most components in automotive, aerospace and equipment assembly aren't manufactured by the OEM...all they do is assembly. Cordless Snow blower recommendation?

Not sure I agree with that... I leave the lithium battery (or batteries...has receptacles for 2, but I normally just put one in) in my EGO snow blower which stays in an unheated attached garage. So far (after 3 winters in Vermont), no problems using it in the winter. Lithium batteries will...

Not really sure, actually... There was never a cast on her leg...just some kind of boot (looks like something Robocop would wear). I've had an EGO battery powered snow blower for a few years now. It's good for 6" or so of snow...maybe a bit more if the snow is powdery. Mine is not self propelled. I use it to clear 40-50 feet of sidewalk and it does quite well. It uses 2 (7.5 A/h) batteries but I just normally use one...

1735M - Putting on snow chains isn't as easy as you would think.

Yeah...one... Measure the offset to make sure flipping the wheels will give you what you need before you dismount the wheeels. Gotta disagree with you, Eric... Although not near as bad as it was 20 years ago, HST isn't as efficient as a gear tractor. But, HST is more convenient...with one exception. The power-reverser transmission is almost as convenient as HST, with less power being lost. Unlike HST, a reverser...

Two reasons, I think... 1) Mostly, the cost...pull behind blowers are pretty expensive...I'd say 30% more then the rear push blowers 2) In the US, pull behind blowers are relatively new to many of us...and not near as available as the rear push. I live in a snowy area (central Vermont) and I...

    Good morning!!!!

Did you use the drill you bought for the job, Drew? So far, I've never broken a marker when putting them out...my Frontier snow blower has eaten a few though

    First snow for tractor use

I suggest you plan on plugging in the block heater for an hour or so when the ambient temperature is 32 degrees or lower. You won't need more then an hour or so. Yanmar engines (which is what your 855 has under the hood) are pretty good at starting in cold weather, but a warm block really helps...

BBB is probably DOA...hope so, at least Certain parts will likely be stand-alone bills, as they should be. As far as EV's in general, the state and federal governments should be the only entities mandated to convert...no exceptions

    Good morning!!!!

2021-12-31, 0539 33° right now...high about 40...really weird for Vermont, this time of the year. Between Tylenol and heat, the shoulder is doing better than yesterday...I'll be trying ice packs today. Still painful when I move my left arm...just not as bad as it was... No plans...do need a...

    Good morning!!!!

They'll discharge to around 30%, IIRC. No need to charge them to full capacity when not in use I use my 5.0 A/h batteries during the warmer weather since they're relatively light for use with the chainsaw, pole saw and string trimmer. The 7.5 A/h batteries are only used during the colder months...

    Good morning!!!!

I've been using a heat pack and Tylenol. Stepdaughter suggested using an ice pack rather then the heat. I'll try that tomorrow... It's not as painful as it was yesterday and this morning....but, still... How did antibiotics ruin your shoulder?

    Idling for extended time

I think Realtornz is a New Zealander, so emissions requirements may differ However, as a few others wrote, run the engine at a high idle (1500)...not going to hurt the engine, fuel economy won't suffer and less chance of lugging the engine (bad for the bearings)

Rim guard or not? Why a ballast box instead of boxblade?

If that happened, it would be operator error...going too fast for conditions and not understanding (or ignoring) the limitations of the equipment... In other words, a Darwin award winner...
  135. RoyJackson

Rim guard or not? Why a ballast box instead of boxblade?

There is absolutely no need to raise any implement to full height unless clearance is needed. My gear comes up just high enough...if, for some reason I need more height, I'll raise it, than lower as soon as practical All this is common sense...not rocket science

  137. RoyJackson

Rim guard or not? Why a ballast box instead of boxblade?

Same here... When we first moved here, I moved our 2.5 acre lawn with a 35 HP Deere 4400 and 72" RFM. The lawn was reasonably flat, but still slow going. I do the job faster and better with a zero-turn and 60" deck.
  138. RoyJackson

Truck snowplow on tractor front 3 point

I expect most full sized utility tractors have a road gear...30-35 MPH, so they can travel reasonably fast between fields CUTs, not so much...I think my 4052R tops out at 18 MPH (depends on the tire type and size)
  139. RoyJackson

Hydrogen fuel makes more sense then batteries, IMHO. Hydrogen is the most common element, virtually inexhaustible. Definitely has a future in aviation, some vehicles (probably trucks) and, possibly seafaring (although I expect most ships will probably be nuclear powered).

Truck snowplow on tractor front 3 point

Main thing, filled tires add stability to an inherently unstable machine. All my tractors have had filled tires, but for stability, not as counterweight
  146. RoyJackson

    Good morning!!!!

No dump run today, since stepdaughter went to the ER due to a UTI of some sort I did move the trash bags and such to the garage door so it'll be easier to load the truck tomorrow Now, I have a doctor's appointment at 0800 tomorrow, for them to explain the results of an echocardiogram I had a...
  147. RoyJackson

Rim guard or not? Why a ballast box instead of boxblade?

Maybe, but rear tire ballast doesn't move the pivot point of any load on the front axle, appreciatively. Weight on the 3PH does, thus reducing wear and tear on the front axle, steering gear, etc.
  148. RoyJackson

Rim guard or not? Why a ballast box instead of boxblade?

  149. RoyJackson

Rim guard or not? Why a ballast box instead of boxblade?

Biggest advantage of a ballast box is a lot of weight in a comparatively compact size. I've got a Deere brand box I've had for years, along with 600-700 lbs. of sand that was in it when I bought it. Although I haven't had need of it since moving to Vermont (2012), I'll keep it Some guys use...

Woods Blower keeps snapping grade 5 bolts

It does if you have a live PTO... "What would bliping the throttle do?" If you're a younger guy, and haven't had a vehicle with a standard transmission, you may not be familiar... As the clutch is released, the engine may stall (sudden load on the engine). Blipping the throttle increases the...

There's a number of sources for Ballast Boxes...and consider Craigslist too (which is where I found mine, a John Deere box with 600-700 pounds of sand). Woods Blower keeps snapping grade 5 bolts

I doubt if too many TBNers have a gear tractor with a live PTO anymore. I had a couple in the old days (Deere 670 and 790), and LD1's post exactly describes the process. I'll add one thing...if the tractor has a foot throttle, be prepared to "blip" the RPM when engaging the PTO.
  175. RoyJackson

    Good morning!!!!

Yep, and I'd rather have the snow... Some folks in New England ***** about winter and snow...you have to ask..."why live here?" I love watching snow...don't care to drive in it anymore. Good planning minimizes that... For me, snow is what really replenishes the aquifer. If you have a well, you...
  176. RoyJackson

Woods Blower keeps snapping grade 5 bolts

Easiest thing is to try another brand pf Grade 5 bolts. It's an unfortunate fact that there are counterfeit bolts...lower grade then what's advertised or marked on the head. Very serious problem with Grade 8's, but that isn't limited to the harder grades.

    Width of 3-point Implements

It'll depend on the type of implement...a land plane or box blade, the same as the width of your tractor (at the widest point) would be adequate. An implement that can angle (rear blade, landscape rake) should be wider to accommodate the angling and still be the width of the tractor
