my case 495 is emitting black exhaust.the timing gears seem to be misaligned the marks don't seem to be in the right places on the gears.the diagram in the manual doesn't show the marks am I on the right track is is there some common problem I don't see?

my case Ih 495 tracter is emitting black exhaust.every thing ''seems'' to check out but the timing.the gears seem to be installed in the wrong position.the manual shows the gears but not the marks need help to set timing or am I missing a common problem from another source?
