After wrestling with this problem for months, I believe I've finally cured it. I could not pinpoint the problem as it was erratic and seemed to elude testing. I even plumbed in flowmeters and pressure guages on the front axle so I could monitor it in use and when it locked up. NOTHING. Anyway...
