Good response. I back my hay wagons into a coverall type fabric building with a 16 foot wide door, often with a single row of round bales on them just to protect them from an upcoming rain. I always use a tractor, no issue. I wouldn't even consider attempting the same with my truck. I always go...
Your are lucky to be at the planning stage with a clean slate. I moved into a place, made a few changes, but didn't have the time or money to get the most out of it.
You didn't say how you were planning/designing the layout. Are you using some sort of CAD software? If not, I would suggest so...
i live on very rocky conditions in about 1/3 of my acreage, and try to keep about 20 acres under control of weeds and the like. My first used rotary cutter was set to low the first year and I punched the blades thru the deck top ruining it. I bought a new one the next year and started off higher...
Couldn't resist stopping to get a pic of the leaves against the blue sky. One of the best years in the last 15 we have been here. And the sky without a cloud to be seen. Makes one appreciate being in the country.
Thanks for response. Previous owner spread poultry litter before our time (maybe 20 years ago), and it did improve yield dramatically. Back then, they almost paid to have it taken away, but they've gotten smarter. Not so cheap any more. Thanks again.
Soil pH from the 2009 test was 7.5. If I remember my science classes, not overly extreme either way. No I didn't apply the suggested fertilizer back then. Even now with increased costs, I have trouble justifying that expense. I was always wondering about the spring seeding and the aforementioned...
Thanks all for responding. I've got some ideas to follow up on over the next while. When would you folks suggest aerating or discing, fall, before the snow or spring when the frost is out the ground?
I had soil tested in 2009. Results recommended 280 lbs potash/acre and 80 lbs phosphate per acre. I was thinking the roller would crush material, so glad that's confirmed. I'm reluctant to get a disc harrow. I guess an option would be to disc half the filed year one, and take hay off other...
Hello from Eastern Ontario, Canada. I'm looking for some advice on improving my 20 acre hayfield. We've owned the place for about 16 years. I have all my own equipment and have taken about 40-65 round bales off over the years. Per my seed store I have top dressed a couple of times, most...
I used a length of ductwork and plugged one end with a piece of circular wood. I then used a duct cap on the other end again using a circular piece of wood so I could screw into. Put on a fold down handle. Cutout the desired size I wanted, and wrapped lots of places with Duct tape or gorilla...
Yup, Ontario. Sorry tho. 17 cents , not 18. End of 2020, we were paying 21.7 on peak hours, but with various rebates, and adjustments due to COVID over the last two years. This month they adjusted again to .082 until early February.
Up here in Canada, we've had a few frosty nights at -30C plus wind chill effect. I, like a few others am retired so need to blow or plow is never right now. The other to whom one must obey is no longer on standby for the expected grandchild arrival, as she arrived two weeks ago.
I have my block...
I live just outside of Ottawa, Ontario. We've just gone thru a bunch of nights with temps down to -25 to -30C plus wind chill. I do keep my TN-75 in a unheated building, but it does have a block heater with a Wi-Fi plug. I generally turn it on two to three hours before I need it. A reasonably...
