    Expected Depreciation in Used Tractors?

Warranty and no risk of getting somebody else's problem. I can afford to buy, but I can't afford to discover why the last person got rid of it... Any pre-emissions tractor is going to hold its value, provided it's not abused to death or just plain worn out. What'd hurt is an emissions tractor...

Loctite, where to use or avoid

Don't use it with machine screws, or generally under 3/8" to 1/2" fine thread, if you want to get it apart again. (Believe some of it advises against using with fine thread altogether.) Machine screws (generally) don't need that kind of holding power, but if you need it to never come apart red...

    Back dragging: how aggressive?

Back in the day I pulled the end right off a FEL bucket cylinder by working with it fully extended. Pa wasn't entirely impressed... Since then, if I need the cylinders out I keep them not quite fully extended. Better a popped hose etc. than hard damage.

Yesterday. Would you buy and EV?

For a utility tractor, that does 10-minute tasks and doesn't get far from the buildings? No brainer, I'd buy an EV in a minute. This is the kind of service that is a T4 emissions nightmare and where an electric would excel. Now... keeping ground worked ahead of a planting crew, rolling 24...

My Tractor Mechanic is not happy

What's your mechanic really not happy about? Knowing he won't be getting calls to deal with broken plastics, electrical problems, regeneration issues etc.? (y) Give this girl a little care and it'll run another 67 years.

Today, would you buy an EV vehicle.

This. The North America power grid is already broken, and we're not going to power 276 million US vehicles by switching light bulbs. We need to decide what the power of the future will be, and start building in earnest. We're literally putting the cart before the horse by pushing electrics...

Today, would you buy an EV vehicle.

Like others I'm keeping an eye on the industry. But the range, life expectancy, and replacement cost all need to improve before I could consider electric. As much as they'd probably love it, I'm not trading every few years to keep the battery in warranty. And despite their marketing, I need...

    SURPRISE!

Few years ago I had purchased an 8-foot florescent fixture from a "big" box home improvement store. Opened it and lo & behold literally half the components were missing. So I return it, and told customer service exactly what the reason was. Went back to the electrical aisle to get another...

Why no hydrostatic transmissions on larger tractors?

International tried it in the 1970's, and they weren't the answer for the reasons others mentioned: loud, ran hot, and didn't pull well under load. Now, had IH took a different route, they had the ingredients for what we now call IVT. Hindsight 20/20.

    Post emissions used tractors.

This. DPF engines need to be kept at temp and worked. Idling and short run/stop cycles will lead to problems. We're in the same position as the OP. Also looking for a 70-100 JD or KB, and anything pre-emissions is top dollar, beat to death, or both. Can afford to buy, but CANNOT afford to...

Are you "brand" person when it comes to your tractor?

Our loyalty is to: 1. A proven make that's been around and will be around, and: 2. A dealership that'll treat one fairly and stand behind their product. We have two dealers of a certain brand in the area, one that's pretty good, and one I won't ever set foot in again. If the good dealer ever...

I need a propane torch that works

I'll second the Turbo Torch. Workplace has older ones, probably going back decades and the things last forever.

What Insane/Crazy Price did You Pay Today?

Almost paid $300/each for pickup truck tires today. And not 22" mudders or anything like that, just 245/17" all-season. Fortunately was able to find a set in another decent brand for less. They better last a while!!

City kids do not leave keys in vehicles. . . It’s different out here...

This area used to be like you mentioned, crime all but unheard of and keys left in everything. Several years ago it started to change. Today? If it's not in one's line of sight it better be locked. Even inside a secured building isn't enough, the keys need to be out. Sad what's happened in...

Can a diesel engine run on gas. .

While older diesels were more forgiving for small amounts of gas for anti-gel purposes, you really don't want gas of any kind in diesel fuel. This is especially true in a newer common-rail engine (Tier 3 and up). At minimum you're flirting with a $10,000+ non-warranty repair. Story: A...

Would you buy a 30 year old truck with 51 miles on it?

Expect to be replacing all the axle/hub seals. Used to have these leak on trucks that only sat over a winter, much less 25 years. :) Should be a solid truck if the money's right. Just plan on working the cobwebs out, esp. with anything rubber.

    Tractor News Viable Electric Tractor?

Spend big money on repairs and be down half the time? Sounds like the current diesels with emissions! 💸 I'm in the market for a 70-100 hp utility tractor, and would buy electric in a minute if it meant not fighting all the mandated emissions stuff. Some will say "Then find a good old used...

“Buy the dealer, not the machine” is outdated

We have two dealers that for the discussion carry “Brand X”, one of the leading makes. Both are roughly the same distance away. The first dealer has been good enough to work with, some quibbles but no show stoppers. The other... family owned and ran and off-the-charts arrogant. I’ve...

    Massey 4225

Hi folks, I'm looking at getting a Massey 4225. Anything I need to know or look for? Good/bad/ugly? It has factory cab, MFWD, 12 speed (4x3) manual trans and mechanical reverser. My concerns are these: 1. The speed and range shifting are done with one lever. You have speeds 1-4, then "+"...
