Looking for my next lawn/garden tractor, possible electric conversion

Wow... This guy appears to have built his own electric mini tractor from the ground up. It's got JD Green paint but it is not a JD. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/357561950459215/?ref=saved&referral_code=null

Any pricing yet on the new E tractors?

But, if you read carefully, they never say anything definitive. They say "MAY last 12-15 years." There aren't any BEVs today that have even been on the road that long. They also never define what they mean by "last". There are two things that can happen to EV (or any similar) batteries: 1)...

Any pricing yet on the new E tractors?

Indefinite. No, I have been experiencing EV ownership firsthand for nearly a decade, and I've been getting told how awful it is by people the entire time. :ROFLMAO: I don't drive an EV for environmental reasons. I drive an EV because my first was a plug-in hybrid (Ford Fusion Energi) that I...

Any pricing yet on the new E tractors?

That's a warranty, not an expected lifetime. Do you need to replace the engine when the warranty is up on your ICEV? FWIW, my last vehicle that wasn't a BEV, the engine quit and that's why I got rid of it. It was a plug-in hybrid (Chevy Volt), though, so at least I was able to use the battery...

What is the intended purpose of a pickup truck? Is it for farm work? Towing a travel trailer? Towing a work trailer? Hauling stuff from Home Depot? Etc etc... There's a million uses for a pickup. Some of them lend themselves to EV pickups, and some don't. Purchase accordingly. They make REALLY...

Any pricing yet on the new E tractors?

Find me a single EV that has a battery that's only expected to last 8 years, and I'll tell ya. ;) The idea of a required replacement is largely untrue. With airplanes, the Time Between Overhauls is published and must be adhered to by commercial operators, but private individuals and companies...

Solis SV24 Electric tractor - Here is what we know so far...

I started to type about that, but then realized my post was already way too long! But you make a good point. Charging efficiency depends on voltage. Using a standard 120V outlet, you get about 75%-80% efficiency. Using 240V, it's 90% or a little better. At 90% efficiency, you'll get 9kWh into...

Solis SV24 Electric tractor - Here is what we know so far...

As usual, though, most of this is overblown by the media, who loves a clickbait headline, especially one related to Teslas. In reality, what I'm hearing in the community is that people were parking outside (letting the battery get cold soaked) at low state of charge, and then running to the...

Looking for my next lawn/garden tractor, possible electric conversion

For something the size of a combine, yes, probably, though it might be worth doing a diesel-electric hybrid similar to how a modern locomotive works. For a SCUT that's not used commercially, it's absolutely useful - A SCUT usually has an engine in the neighborhood of 25hp, which is a lot less...

Looking for my next lawn/garden tractor, possible electric conversion

It's not about the gas. It's about me being tired of replacing engine parts... And I'd really like it to be quieter too. Just curious, what kind of battery mower does he have? Sadly, most companies' first electric efforts are really seriously half-assed and seem to be designed to convince...

Solis SV24 Electric tractor - Here is what we know so far...

There's just not enough surface area, and much/most of it isn't going to be at the optimum angle to absorb solar energy anyway. IIRC there is 733 watts per square meter of energy coming from the sun at the equator at noon on a perfectly clear day, and current solar technology is only 20-25%...

Looking for my next lawn/garden tractor, possible electric conversion

You know, I've been wondering what that would look like, so let's go through the process of making an educated guess. My most frequent use is to mow. Even when the grass is pretty thick, I can easily mow my two acres twice on 5 gallons of gas with the Legacy and 60" deck, and that probably...

Looking for my next lawn/garden tractor, possible electric conversion

I don't mind proprietary mounting, I'm pretty much expecting that this project will require some design and CNC work to get motors mounted in the right places. What do you see as the "big difference" between garden tractors and SCUTs in terms of attachment mounting? There seem to be a lot of...

You're absolutely right about the Tesla charging integration being important. The only legacy automakers that haven't yet announced that they're switching to it are VW, Mitsubishi, Mazda, and Stellantis (Chrysler). As for the batteries, some EV batteries have been crap in certain situations...

Looking for my next lawn/garden tractor, possible electric conversion

Well, the ElecTrak is just too small IMO. I think the mower deck is only 42". That's a big step down from a 60". And part of this is to find the best *tractor* to start with. I'm still going to run it on gas/diesel at the beginning. When I first started thinking about this, I was thinking I'd...

Looking for my next lawn/garden tractor, possible electric conversion

Hi all, I'm looking for my next tractor. Help me find it! I'm also interested in possibly getting one that has a blown engine but is otherwise OK, and converting it to electric as a DIY project. I have a 2 acre lawn with lots and lots of trees including some wooded area, and a 180-foot...

Any pricing yet on the new E tractors?

This got really long, so here's the tl;dr: 1) Cold affects all cars, EVs more so than others, Teslas less so than other EVs 2) Tesla charging stations are easy to find, work well, and are usually in line of travel. Most other manufacturers are adopting the Tesla standard for charging as well. 3)...

Tesla also was a new company, and they had to invest in building factories, scaling manufacturing, building showrooms and service centers since they don't use dealers, etc. Existing manufacturers don't have any of that additional time and expense needed, and they also don't need to do more R&D...

Any pricing yet on the new E tractors?

Dealers don't make money selling cars. They make money on maintenance - So they're very afraid of electric vehicles. People aren't buying electric vehicles *from dealers*. The Tesla Model Y is the top selling vehicle worldwide so far this year, so people are most certainly buying EVs.

Just a few thoughts from someone who actually has experience with EVs... Five so far (2 plug-in hybrid, 3 fully electric). I would really like an electric tractor for my own use, mainly because mine is noisy as hell and I just finished rebuilding the engine! There are definitely use cases where...

Simplicity Legacy w/25hp Kohler Command running really rich

Just wanted to follow up on this thread. Got it all back together and running a few weeks ago, after lots of work: * Rebuilt carb (probably unnecessary, but that was my starting point because it was running rich) * Completely new #1 cylinder head, including all valves, springs, rods, lifters...

Kohler CH25S parts manual and/or exhaust bracket bolt

Well, the immediate problem is solved. The 3/8 bolt Is for older ones than my 1997/8. The correct bolt is 7/16-14x1” per the tractor’s parts manual. I still wish I had a parts manual for the engine.
  23. M

Kohler CH25S parts manual and/or exhaust bracket bolt

Odd. The Simplicity parts manual shows it but specifies a 3/8-16 x 5/8”. I took another 3/8-16 bolt and tried it and I’m able to just slide it in. Inner diameter of threads measured with calipers at 3/8” so it’s got to be slightly bigger somehow.

Kohler CH25S parts manual and/or exhaust bracket bolt

Hi all, Does anyone have a parts manual for the Kohler 25hp on the Legacy? (CH25S-68583) I can't find one online, there's just a bunch of parts sites and none of them list the part I need which is just a simple bolt that I need the size of. It goes into the block so I can't take it to the store...

    Kohler Command CH25S rocker installation

Right, but I’m not reinstalling any lifters. I installed two new ones on the side I opened up. They’re dry, so there’s nothing in them to bleed. Right?
  26. M

    Kohler Command CH25S rocker installation

Just popped the other valve cover off again for a look and the rocker pivots on that side are circular. There’s also a slight V between the rocker arms.
  27. M

    Kohler Command CH25S rocker installation

Ah, that's a good idea. So the two rocker pivots should be parallel? Or is there a slight V to them? Looked like the latter to me, but I'd also prefer something more precise than "well, that seems about right". As far as the lifters, I got new ones. Nothing to bleed. Local dealer's head...

    Kohler Command CH25S rocker installation

Hi all, I was watching a YouTube video about this engine and they talked about how there's a little depression in the cylinder head where the bumps on the rocker pivots go, and showed using a wrench to twist the pivot while torquing the bolt so that it sits correctly in the head and stays...

    $700 muffler?!? :o

Kind of like that, only if you moved the exit pipe so that it was facing the camera to the right of where the bracket attaches. Somehow, in my initial perusal of the parts diagram, I missed the fact that the muffler itself does not include the exhaust pipe, there is a separate pipe and clamp...

Simplicity Legacy w/25hp Kohler Command running really rich

I'd have to look at the hours. It's well past 1000 hours. As far as good at maintenance, I've been working on lawn tractors that belonged to my dad and then to me since I was little (49 now), and I took a 1-week course in small engine repair once upon a time. However, I'm clearly not doing it...

    $700 muffler?!? :o

Sadly, no. This is a Command series, not Courage. Even if the pipes were in the right place for the engine, it doesn't look like it'd fit under the hood. Oooh, good call. I don't know that I've ever specifically seen exhaust parts, but I have definitely been pleasantly surprised to find some...

    $700 muffler?!? :o

Yes, it's very similar to that. That'd probably fit the engine, but it'd melt my hood. LOL The original Simplicity part has an exhaust pipe that comes from the side of the muffler, not the end, and extends down to just below the front bumper, exhausting forward. Now, since I'm not exactly...

Hi all, I'm in the process of doing some repairs to my Simplicity Legacy (see Simplicity Legacy w/25hp Kohler Command running really rich). I have the muffler off it for the first time since I've had it, and, well, there's an awful lot of loose metal in there. :ROFLMAO: I went to see what a...

CH25S - 68583. I don't have a compression tester... At least, not yet. :ROFLMAO: But, just to ensure that there isn't anything wrong with the plug, I'm going to swap the spark plugs tomorrow and see whether the problem follows it or not. The buildup of debris causing a leak is a definite...

Simplicity Legacy w/25hp Kohler Command running really rich

Update: Upon suggestion from @tomplum, I pulled out my temp gun to verify that both cylinders were running. I was sure they were, since it was just as smooth (or not) as normal, but... They weren't. The right-hand cylinder (the one on the ignition module side, opposite the fuel pump side)...

Simplicity Legacy w/25hp Kohler Command running really rich

EDIT: Posted resolution at the end. One cylinder wasn't developing much power due to a bent intake valve pushrod and a bunch of unburned fuel was getting through that side. New cylinder head kit fixed it. I have a Simplicity Legacy (non-XL) with the Kohler 25hp gas engine. While I was mowing a...

Ghost in the tractor... (Engine suddenly quits with motion)

Well, I wanted to follow up on this... The mystery is solved, finally. After doing a BUNCH of things without 100% success, the one that finally worked was replacing the fuel pump. When I took the old pump apart, I found that the linkage inside it was loose in such a fashion that it could...

    Larger electric lawn tractors

Hi all, I'll cut right to the chase: I have 2 acres and a decent sized driveway (170 feet long, averages about 16 feet wide) that I currently take care of with a 23-year-old Simplicity Legacy (non XL) with a 60" mower deck, turbo blower, and 46" snowblower. Between the age of the machine and...

Ghost in the tractor... (Engine suddenly quits with motion)

Sigh. After the carb rebuild it would run for a half hour or an hour and quit until it was cool. Replaced the ignition coils and it ran fine for the rest of the summer. Went to put the snowblower on it, it fired up and I shoved the choke in... Too fast. I've done that plenty of times...

Is AB-1346 The Beginning To The End Of The GARDEN TRACTOR?

This thread is interesting... So many people fighting change. Guess what grasshopper, change is the only constant! Meanwhile, I came here as the result of a search trying to find an electric tractor because I WANT ONE. I have two acres that I take care of with a Simplicity Legacy that's 23...

Ghost in the tractor... (Engine suddenly quits with motion)

Ghost in the tractor... (Engine suddenly quits with motion)

Well... Before I pulled the carb apart I decided to replace the fuel filter and check for fuel flow to the filter and check the fuel pump. Ghost in the tractor... (Engine suddenly quits with motion)

I believe so - I'll have to double check. I had that thought as well, so I checked the oil right away and there's plenty (changed it recently). It's possible the switch has gone bad though. This would certainly explain why it's shutting off so quickly. Yes, that's one of the first things I...

Ghost in the tractor... (Engine suddenly quits with motion)

OK, sounds like my initial thoughts are in the right ballpark. I'm going to take apart the carb and clean it up this weekend as well as replace the fuel filter, and see where that gets me. That's an interesting idea... I'll take a look at that too. Thanks!

Ghost in the tractor... (Engine suddenly quits with motion)

OK, this one's a bit weird to me. I have a late-90s Simplicity Legacy (prior to the XL model) with a Kohler engine. I was working in the yard, driving around a corner when boom, my engine just quit suddenly. It was as if I had shut it off. No sputtering, no nothing. After looking at it for a...

Hi all, New to the board - I recently bought a house with a 2-acre yard and a used Simplicity Legacy w/25hp Kohler and 60" deck to go with it. I'm looking for attachments, but the dealers aren't much help because they're mostly interested in selling new tractors and the attachments that go...
