Finally got it figured out! There is a connection on the side of the transmission case that pipes to the mid mount scv that is actually a check valve. Pulled it off and sure enough the guts were gone out of it. It's number 12 in the diagram. Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

So I split our 5420 at work to replace a broken park pawl in the tranny and found these pieces laying in the bottom as well. I cannot seem to locate where they go or where they came from. I've searched through the parts diagrams for the tranny as well as the rear diff and hydraulics to no avail...
