Regret not getting a backhoe for my tractor

I just about “LOLed” at your cash-cavation post, but couldn’t find a “funny” reaction option here…

    Compact sub compact?

I have a Kubota BX at our lake cabin, which has some steep hills. Side hill cutting is out of the question, but vertically it’s great - will climb about anything in 4wd low… so it works well as long as you work within its limitations. You’re right though… suicidal taking a hill horizontally.

    Compact sub compact?

Did that backhoe work well? I have a BX1880 and don’t think I actually need a bh, but it’s something to think about, depending on what comes up now that I’m retired.

    20 inch chainsaw recommendation

I have 3 Echo products - a 20+ year old chainsaw, a 21 year old weedeater and a 5 year old weedeater - and you’re right… they’re all “Hondas”. They virtually always start, they rarely break and I don’t have to pamper them. I don’t use the chainsaw much, but it can sit there for a year but will...

Buying Advice Questions about potential purchase, not sure where to start

There are no doubt good tractors made by others, but if you decide to make a change "down the road" you can always sell a K or a JD because everyone is familiar with them, and parts should be available for a long time.

Buying Advice Questions about potential purchase, not sure where to start

Someone might've mentioned this - I didn't check all the comments - but a tooth bar is incredibly helpful for digging and clearing land. I haven't had blackberry plants to deal with, but my Kubota BX1880 (their smallest-horsepower model) is a brush-clearing savage with the BXpanded Piranha...

1 tractor rest of forever -- what brand?

Some good points. Every increment farther out from the fulcrum (if that's the right term) reduces lift capacity, including, of course, the distance the SSQA pushes it out. So far I've only had the loader bucket on my Kubota BX, but do take that off frequently to mow without taking the whole...
  10. P

1 tractor rest of forever -- what brand?

OK, so you can convert to SSQA - that's good. I'm sure the JD-branded implements are fine, but generally better to have a broad range of choices, i.e. let competition among the implement manufacturers work for you.

1 tractor rest of forever -- what brand?

I have the smallest Kubota - a BX1880 (the BX 80 series models all have the same frame) - and am 5'11, 220, and I have plenty of room.
  12. P

1 tractor rest of forever -- what brand?

Do John Deere tractors generally require "proprietary" attachments/implements, or can they accept generically-designed attachments? Or maybe it varies by JD model, etc. That's my understanding based on comments over the years, but it seems unlikely. For reference, my total tractor experience...

Is a subcompact under 25hp enough power?

"Lawnmower and nothing else" is a little harsh, lol. I cut a flat spot for a 16x24 shed out of a hillside made of clay & rock with a Kubota BX1880. It wasn't fast, but totally up to the task. That said, if I had several acres to maintain I'd probably move to a B or an L for speed & capacity...

Is a subcompact under 25hp enough power?

I have the very smallest-HP Kubota BX subcompact - 18hp - and while it's terrific for my use - mowing an acre or so on a pretty steep hill (lake property) and occasional excavating - I'd likely go bigger if I had 15 acres to maintain, depending some on the specifics. Even at 18hp my BX is...

Side by Side for yard work 2x4 ok?

We have a 2017 Ranger 500 that my wife gave me for Christmas in 2020 (used) - what an incredible surprise! - to use at our lake cabin. It's the only ATV I've ever had, so minimal experience here, but while I typically operate in 2wd (i.e. with the differential locked), switching to turf mode to...

Yellow Jacket Nests While Bush hogging, whats your plan?

Happened to me several years ago while weedeating a steep little bank behind our house. Didn't hear anything - gas machine - and was wearing gym shorts and t-shirt. They got me about a dozen times, some inside the shorts (but not, well, you know). Hurt pretty bad! I'd never reacted much to a...

    First electric tractor ride

I resemble that - a subcompact tractor owner who uses it maybe 40 or so hours per year. They're 40 helpful hours for me though, mostly mowing steep hills at a lake property and some clearing/digging with the FEL. Right now I'm digging a spot for a pole shed (and enjoying it, but don't tell my...

    I don't understand something.

I bought a subcompact Kubota about 4 years ago to help me maintain the family lake property, which, like many such properties, is situated on a big**s hill out in the sticks. Mostly I mow with it, clear brush, and use the FEL for digging out around the dock (off-season, when the lake level is...

    Recommended Tractor for 4.5 acres

I think that's a very valid solution for many circumstances, one exception being where mowing steep hills is required - especially if the ground will sometimes be damp. My little 4wd tractor is great for the steep hills I mow at our lake cabin...as long as I travel vertically up & down it, of...

    Recommended Tractor for 4.5 acres

Don't know if it was noted elsewhere in this discussion, but are you not going with a backhoe model? Plusses/minuses, like everything else, but if the BH is out, a "plus" is that it leaves more room within your budget for the brush hog, flail, etc. For example I think the Kubota BH models are...

    Recommended Tractor for 4.5 acres

With respect to the FEL/box blade discussion, I would emphasize that it's not "either" an FEL "or" a box blade - having both would be nice (i don't have a bb yet), and also lots of people use the box blade for ballast weight when the FEL is on the tractor. I have a Heavy Hitch/suitecase weights...

    Recommended Tractor for 4.5 acres

I was assuming Kansas = "flat" too, but if it's hilly a B might be more ideal, as you mentioned. I have a BX1880 in Kentucky and I'm on a pretty steep hillside a lot. I'm careful and have developed my tip-o-meter (aka my posterior), and it's working out fine, but the wider stance of the B...

    4' X 17' Gravel pathway at 20% slope

Got ya - thanks Ed. I have only a Kubota subcompact tractor - maybe 2800# with the FEL, MMM, weight bar and me on it, and no tracks - but maybe many slow passes with that would help smush it down.

Today, would you buy an EV vehicle.

Having your own solar power is a very different scenario than buying electric at whatever market price from what's basically a monopoly. Well done. 408 miles seems pretty great. Have you driven on a long trip, and if so how tough was it to find recharging stations, and how long did it take to...

Today, would you buy an EV vehicle.

Absolutely - 100% agree. Markets find solutions for virtually every big and little problem....if we let them. Our national budget and economy get screwed up when the government thinks it's in charge of the markets, and especially when it tries to "be" the economy. Borrowing and spending...

Today, would you buy an EV vehicle.

I've liked the idea since the first time a Tesla silently rolled past me in a parking lot - the quietness was beautiful - but I'm not giving up the range of my IC vehicle. I might consider one as a commuter car, but I don't commute (been remote for 25 years). On the environment subject - and I...

A little off track, but.... Back in 2009, by a freakish event that I won't go through here, my wife received a new Mercedes CLK350 convertible - a beautiful car, and an extravagance we never would've pursued on our own. So we took it out for a spin on a nice summer evening and along the way...

    New Purchase

I didn't get a zero turn because I understand they can be very dangerous on a steep hill, especially if it's a bit damp. Those front wheels are just big casters, i.e. no steering capability. However, the zero-turn models with a steering wheel do actually have front wheels that steer, so likely...

    New Purchase

I'm no horse farmer, and just have a Kubota BX1880 with loader and 54" mid-mount mower deck that I use to maintain lake-cabin property in Kentucky. Maybe an acre or so to mow, 2/3 of it a steep hill. So consider the source, but honestly I could mow 2 acres easily with my tractor, which is...
  40. P

Would a zero turn be faster than a B2601?

Oh yeah, I've done that type of wheelie before on my subcompact Kubota - lucky it didn't cause a heart attack! By now though my ROPS has "trimmed" several of the lower limbs at the lake cabin where I mow.

Compact Tractor Dealers Ignore Two-thirds of Their Potential Website Customers, Industry Survey Shows

That's a good example of "to each his/her own". My FIL owned a pharmacy, and for 10+ years had a computer system to print labels, keep patient files, etc., but was 100% not interested in going online or using a computer at all in retirement. He seemed pretty dang happy though, lol.

Compact Tractor Dealers Ignore Two-thirds of Their Potential Website Customers, Industry Survey Shows

Yes - market speed (if that's the right term) changes with the scope and speed of the media available to facilitate it. Today markets have become more and more fluid due to the immediate availability of so much product and price info. (BTW I'm 64, and most peers that I know seem pretty tuned...

What tires should you get on a new Tractor, R1, R4, or Turf?

Rim guard or not? Why a ballast box instead of boxblade?

I have a Heavy Hitch with about 250lbs of suitcase weights, so ~300lbs total, and since it functions as a hitch I guess it's a degree more functional than a ballast box. To remove it I can easily lift each suitcase weight off and then the hitch itself, so that's handy. The HH wasn't cheap, but...

    Cordless Tools vs. Other Options

I'm totally spoiled by my Dewalt 20v tools. Still can't believe what I can do with a circular saw, jig saw, pole saw and so on with a battery powered tool. I bought a Dewalt grease gun (because I'm lazy maybe) and then added others as time moved on over a couple years, and as a result I have...

    pickup truck size

I have a 4 door truck with a 5' bed that gets used very frequently - at least weekly, often more. Sometimes carries only weedeater, cement bags, etc., sometimes furniture, appliances, push or riding mower, and sometimes it tows the ATV or the SCUT. And it has a locking trunk, usually...

scut ride comfort while mowing, R4 vs turf vs R14

I also use my SCUT - a Kubota BX1880 - to mow steep hills at our lake cabin. A ZT is the obvious choice for relatively flat areas, but I think would skid with me into the afterlife if I used one there, especially if the grass is moist. Have been doing this 4 seasons with turf tires, so not in...

    DK5310se HST Won't Start **Emergency**

This might not be relevant - if not, sorry - but when my ATV wouldn't start the dealer suggested that I "bypass the solenoid" by turning the ignition key on and connecting the poles of the solenoid with a screwdriver. I did that and it fired right up. In my case it was a safety switch that was...

    Prospective purchase for the mountains.

I'd never heard of PowerTrac, but your note made me look, as I mow (etc.) on what I consider pretty steep ground with my Kubota BX subcompact, and the potential for rolling is always on my mind to some degree. Which type/model did you get, and how is it working for you so far?

I realize they're not for everyone, but I've been driving Honda Ridgelines for 10 years, and the under-bed trunk is amazing for carrying tools and other stuff around. pickup truck size

In 2006 we bought a 2wd standard cab 1996 Tacoma, primarily for our son to drive to high school/college, but of course used it ourselves for home projects, etc. Really liked it. The low bed height was great for loading/unloading. The down side was lack of traction. That thing would spin the...

My truck is a Honda Ridgeline, and while it handles my truck needs - which are fairly moderate - it's also a very good driving machine. It's not really "fun" to drive because there's no drama - it just starts, stops, steers/tracks very well. It's a compromise, like anything, but in my...

Hey now, my Ridgeline is comfortable and not as large as an F150, Silverado, RAM, Tundra, etc., but it's hardly a "trucklet", lol. Kidding aside, it has payload capacity near 1500#, can carry a 4x8 sheet lying flat in the bed, and tows up to 5000#. Not a 1:1 substitute for a body-on-frame...

“Buy the dealer, not the machine” is outdated

I bought my subcompact Kubota from the closest dealer (15 minutes away) but had a proposal from a well-established dealer who sells everywhere (2 hours away) so I could make sure the local folks were competitive, and they did get within a couple hundred $, so I bought there. Hi. Read your comment from 8 yrs ago. Need a spot for 18x20' pole shed, digging into a hill, 46" deep at far end. My Kubota BX1880 with FEL & tooth bar digs well. Goodbye old friend....

Yes you should, and let me know how it goes, lol. After enjoying the hemi 6-7 years don't think I'd be satisfied with a V6 either. I drove a diesel JGC while looking in 2018 and was surprised at how quick it seemed. Would that have been a Fiat motor?

    Goodbye old friend....

We loved our 2011 JGC Overland too, also with the hemi, but the air suspension guts had to be replaced twice - once under warranty, the second time in 2018 at our cost of some thousands - and decided it was time to cut bait. We need the space of an SUV (for my wife's business), so in 2019 went...
