If the oil gets frothy, the engine is very likely overfilled. Foamy oil, for whatever reason, does not lubricate adequately.

Just did that with one 5 gal. container for the same reason. I use a siphon to fill a smaller gas can with an easy to use spout (No Spill 2.5 gallon). At least with that can, I get almost all of the gas onto the mower tank.
