PTO link spring on a 420 Onan

It has the same part number (41-010) in my owner's manual as in Messicks without any mention of SN. There's another clue: the same spring (#11) is used 3 times in this machine (implememnt release lever and idler lock). Both of those are the same size as the NEW one I got, just uner 4". So...

PTO link spring on a 420 Onan

Question: could the previous owner have cut the spring on PTO link short to make it fit better or make it taut? Soon after I replaced an engine belt, my PTO kept slipping out and I noticed the spring that holds it unhooks from the bracket. It looked like a piece was missing from end of...

Buy 3400L or wait for 4000 series?

It says in the specs that Steiner can climb up almost 31%, or about 58% grade. may I ask which was the engine in it that withstood a 31% tilt? so far, all the Steiner engines I've heard about stop working above about a 20 degree angle.

Buy 3400L or wait for 4000 series?

Like about 15% degrees like the word around? How would it be different w a kohler or a kubota diesel or an onan? 17 degrees? 20 degrees? but I appreciate knowing how serious the tilt angle issue is. I wasn't concerned before as I thought it would have to be sustained climb over a period of time...

Buy 3400L or wait for 4000 series?

420 comes with a 10 yo Briggs vanguard 23HP serviced all along by reputable dealer. He said Steiner is starting to put vanguards in their new models including 450 im the person who started the Briggs thread couple of weeks ago.

Buy 3400L or wait for 4000 series?

Thank you Jim. I've made a deposit on the Steiner so I'll go ahead with that. I'll know by next year if I Steiner is workingfor me. Again, I didn't see a snow or leaf blower, Or a cab in powertrac list. All of them are essential to me specially in winter.

curious: why do you prefer your Ventrac over something like this, or what the shortcomings of Power Trac?

Buy 3400L or wait for 4000 series?

I didn't know about Power Trac (new to this). I like all the attachments and prices, and the fact that you can actually buy attachments and parts. I'm wondering now if this is the right machine for me or Steiner??? But is it as good, tough, dependable and long lasting as Steiner?? Why...

Buy 3400L or wait for 4000 series?

dealer near me quit selling Steiners! He still loves the machine, but he says parts and attachments, and Steiner HQ were a big PITA.

Do you have a guess if a Steiner 420 or 450 would've rolled in the same spot?

Buy 3400L or wait for 4000 series?

I'm new to Steiner and know next to nothing about Ventrac. But those attachments alone sound like $8-$10K. And you can't go wrong w 100 hours, if you don't mind getting used. I'm getting a 30 year old Steiner 420 because a) my budget, b) cost of needed attachments, and c) I believe these...

    Briggs Vanguard 23 in a Steiner 420

Having decided to buy the 420, now I have to drive 3 hours in my 06 Tundra with a rented trailer to get it. I decided against loading it on the bed of the truck. I'd much rather drive with my e250 diesel sedan. Is it crazy to think of hitching a trailer to a passenger car and tow it back?

Is an old Steiner 420 an old homeowner's best friend?

Come to remember, I had a poly edge on my truck's fisher plow when I first got it. It wore down on my blacktop faster than a pencil eraser on sandpaper. I admit it wasn't level all the way across, but it wore down very fast as I remember

Thanks. I should try that first before getting a brush. I'm learning things here.

Is an old Steiner 420 an old homeowner's best friend?

I'm looking forward to finding a used brush too. my blacktop driveway is steep, so every year I spread a ton (2.5 tons, actually) of salt with my little tail hitch Snoway spreader to melt that last thin layer of snow that remains after I plow. I'm hoping the brush will take care of that and...

    Briggs Vanguard 23 in a Steiner 420

I was hoping I could find the right ramp to go up and down scoop material from the bed of my truck. If that's not feasible, I better get a small tilt trailer.

    Briggs Vanguard 23 in a Steiner 420

Wow. That's terrible. Thanks fir the heads up. is that one of those 1,500# ramps at Home Depot? You'd think they'd build them w a factor of safety. by the way, aside from being a bit frightening, did the deck or the hitch get damaged?

    Briggs Vanguard 23 in a Steiner 420

Well I went and saw both. I think I'm getting the 1998 420 with Briggs Vanguard engine. Was $3k less, and running as smooth as the 430. dealer told me Steiner is using Vanguard in some of their new models. Jim's equipment in Campbell NY look like real nice people. Know their Steiner's and are...

    Briggs Vanguard 23 in a Steiner 420

I'm already leaning towards the 430 Max cause it's cleaner anyway. But how much better can the stock Kohler be as far as the angle? I won't go near 58% or 30 degrees. I'm near my limit w my 15 degrees driveway already. What worries me about inclines, is the switchbacks and saddle paths...

    Briggs Vanguard 23 in a Steiner 420

Thank you. 15 degrees? I'm getting the Steiner cause it can go up slopes (up to 58%!!!). Now my choice is between this 420 w 23 HP Briggs, or a 430 Max with 25 HP Kohler. 430 max- about $1,200 more, is cleaner and has been serviced well by the dealer (new seat, new belts and new park brake).

    Briggs Vanguard 23 in a Steiner 420

So if the original had been Onan, they couldn't have replaced it with same. If it had been Kohler, maybe dealer knew from experience to not put in another Kohler. Also, Kubota 3-cyl diesel is at least twice as expensive as the Briggs. I think the Briggs is a good engine, even though I don't...

    Briggs Vanguard 23 in a Steiner 420

No they never existed together. But when it came time to replace the engine, the Steiner dealer chose to put this Briggs in as replacement. Cost, maybe ($1,800)? Better, more reliable engine? I'll ask and post if I learn anything.

    Briggs Vanguard 23 in a Steiner 420

That's a good point. since this is a reputable Steiner dealer, I feel like they know what they're doing, maybe even prefer this engine from experience over putting in another Kohler or onan? I'll ask them and let you know.

    Briggs Vanguard 23 in a Steiner 420

I'm getting a good deal from a Steiner dealer on a 2001 420. One previous owner. Dealer had this re-powered for the home owner with a Briggs Vanguard 23 HP engine a while back. I guess that's a good thing. Any experience or opinions about this engine?

Is an old Steiner 420 an old homeowner's best friend?

That's the best way to put it, but I doubt it has "NO hydraulic power". Any lifting power I can get is a plus. I'd be glad if it can move a wheel barrow's load at a time given what else it can do. Saves back pain. But if I have to risk to find out, I think I'm gonna try a find loader...

Is an old Steiner 420 an old homeowner's best friend?

After last winter, this 60 something yo Hudson Valley homeowner decided he needs something more than his Tundra with a Fisher plow to take care of the 1/2 mile steep driveway and around the house. Truck does great on the road with 4 studded Nokian tires. But can't keep pushing snow against the...
