    2740 PTO knocking noise

Welcome to the forum. Your story is familiar to me. About 10 years ago I was chipping some dry cascara trees with my Wallenstein chipper when I heard a loud bang and the chipper stopped with the tractor engine still running. PTO lever was still engaged, but shaft was not turning. I called the...

    IH Engine identification 3040912R2

BC-144 is a gas engine. BD-144A is a diesel. I have a BC-144 in my IH3414, which is the industrial (backhoe model) version. My book says a B-275 tractor has a BD-144A in it. 32.3 horsepower.....Dan.

    hydraulic oil filters?

My 2006-2740 Montana has an LS filter on it. # is 400007638. There is also a second # below that on the box it came in: A1823315. Hope this helps.....Dan.

Engine glo plug or pre-heater on a 2004 Yanmar VIO 27-2…does it have one?

I have a 1997 Yanmar 27-2B mini ex, which I believe has the same engine as yours has. My Yanmar service manual says it has an engine air heater mounted on the intake manifold which warms the air in the manifold before sending it to the combustion chamber. It is operated by holding the key in...

LS 2740 - Loses Power Going Uphill

Montana 2740 is gear drive. 4speed with 2 ranges. Have you changed the air filter and cleaned the ducting around it? maybe a rodent built a home in there. could be a brake hanging up. Also check the fuel line and outlet on the tank. The strainer under the fuel cap on mine ripped pretty easily...

    Clear a logjam

I've had reasonable success with a set of log tongs hanging from a chain on the loader bucket or on the mini ex. Usually if you pull a few key pieces from a logjam, the rest will break loose and flow downstream. Just be careful, or you may be going downstream as well......Dan.

Need new Tread Material (where feet go on tractor "floor")

Every 2 or 3 years I paint the floorboards and other stepping surfaces with Rust Oleum paint, then put some dry sand in a large salt shaker and sprinkle generously on the wet paint. When it's dry, brush off the excess. Been doing this for years on both tractors and the mini-excavator......Dan.

Things you could order over 50 years ago that you can't order now !

In the 7th grade, the neighbor kid and I both got JC Higgens single shot .22 rifles for Christmas from our parents. We took them to school on the bus for show and tell when school started again after Christmas break. The bus driver made us sit in the front seat so he could keep an eye on us...

    Strange things - Montana 3840 200-ish hours

Welcome to the site. My 2740 Montana has a similar issue when I am running the brush mower or any reason that causes me to turn around in the seat. The ignition key is in the perfect location to bump with my knee. The shape of the Montana key head catches my pants leg and turns off the...

    Chirping Hydraulic system

I would check the suction pickup and tubing for clogs or debris. Pump maybe starving for oil or cavitating, neither of which is good for the pump....Dan.

    Are you this old?

When I was a kid, all gas stations, most stores and businesses here were closed for the day on Sundays and holidays. If you needed gas or anything besides a quart of milk or a loaf of bread, you waited 'til Monday morning or you borrowed it from a neighbor. Most of the residents here were of...

    Correct Transmission hydraulic oil

Welcome to the site. The above post is correct. I questioned the SAE80 listed in my operators manual when I bought my 2740 new in 2007. The dealer said to just use a good grade of UTF in the transmission and hydraulics, but use 80 or 90w gear oil in the front axle. No problems at all for...

    Are you this old?

I WAS that milkman who delivered to your back door. It was my college job. And yes, we did have trucks in those days. The newest and most coveted one was a brand new 1965 GMC one ton dually.....Dan.

Wood gas vehicles: firewood in the fuel tank

I tend to agree that 135 HP is over stated. My IH TD-14 is only book rated at 79 horsepower, and is at least equal to an older D-4 in size and weight. I shudder at the thought of putting 2000 hours on an old dozer. That's a full year at 40 hours a week, not counting repair and maintenance...

    Pole Chainsaws

I have been using the 12" pruner attachment on my Stihl FS110R for about 10 years now. It is one of my most used (and misused) tools. Works great for pruning, limbing, and even falling smaller trees. It's short enough to carry on my quad and will run about 30-45 minutes on a tank of fuel. It...

What year is my Montana 3840?

TractorData.com says manufacturing dates were 2004 to 2009. My Montana 2740 was built in 2006, also has about 1100 hours. A good selling feature is that nearly all pieces and parts are available through LS tractor dealers, but have blue paint instead of green...Dan.

    How to clear Holly tree

I can feel your pain with holly trees as well. I also live in the PNW, and lots of large english holly, vine maple and blackberries taking over the hillsides. some of the hills are around 30 degree slopes, which I am not comfortable on even with my mini excavator. The blackberries I have...

LS 2740 PTO will not engage

Glad you got it working, sort of. I just went out and tried your method on my 2740 and it worked as well. Don't know what the temperature is at your location, but you may have issues with cold gear oil causing interference with shifting. Try holding the clutch pedal down for a few seconds...

LS 2740 PTO will not engage

welcome to the site. Which gear your tranny is in does not matter. Depress the clutch completely and lightly move the pto lever to the rear of the tractor, then slowly release the clutch pedal. You may have to coax it into gear by briefly engaging and releasing the clutch. It should drop...

    John Deere 27C starter

A quick and painless way to check the quality of the ground is to connect a jumper cable from the ground post of the battery to the engine block. Also make sure you have at least 12.5 volts to the battery, or it won't crank.......Dan.

If I tilt forks all the way down on BX1880, they won't tilt back up.

Try this first.... Pick up the forks about 4 ft., then slowly tip them forward to the dump position, then try to roll them back to level. If that works, there's your problem. The tilt cylinder may be using more fluid than the pump can keep up with. A few more RPMs will help with that. Just...

Side by side questions ok on here?

My 2014 Honda Foreman does the exact same thing. Sounds like it runs out of fuel. Let it sit for 30 minutes or so, and it starts and runs fine. Always happens when I'm way back in the timber. Gas cap is venting so Honda dealer says all they can do is start throwing parts at it. Hope you figure...

Drought In Western US and Canada

Drier here on the north Oregon coast than I've ever seen in my 74 years. We finally got .03 inches of rain and a little lightning early this morning. I think that's the first precipitation in about a month. Around here we usually measure rainfall in feet, not fractions of an inch. Lots of...

Min tractor size for repairing long gravel driveway with potholes?

I can't answer to the snow removal task, as we don't get more than a few inches a year, but with the grading and loader work to be done, the most important thing to consider is the weight and physical size of the tractor rather than horsepower. Most any tractor has power enough to drag an...

    Grease for excavator

I use whatever #2 lithium is on sale at the time I need to restock. Currently, I think I am using the 2 cases I got a deal on from Walmart. I believe the frequency of use is more important than the brand. I tend to over lube all the zerks on the mini excavator to flush out all the dirt and...

What ATV, side by side or UTV do you have.

2008 kawasaki 250 Bayou..... It ain't stylish, powerful, impressive, or expensive. Heck, it's never left my property or even been clean for more than a few hours. I don't think it's ever been in 4th or 5th gear. The only polishing it ever gets is from tree limbs, but it's never let me down and...

Chipper  finally joined the Wallenstein crowd yesterday

Well, after a couple of years looking at mostly Chinese 3 pt. chippers, (yeah, my wallet was squeaking:laughing:) I came home yesterday with a Wallenstein BX42R, which was the one I had hoped to get 2 years ago until I found out the price. I really felt I needed a power feed of some sort due...

    What did Santa bring you?

Were you a good boy (or girl) this year? Or did Santa bring you the usual loud necktie and stale fruitcake? I woke up this morning to a brand new wheelbarrow! "What, a wheelbarrow", I asked. "Yes, you have been spending too much time on the tractors and need the exercise", was...

    Another 3 pt. splitter

Here's an option for those shopping for a splitter. I've been torn between a stand-alone or a 3 pt. for a couple years. A stand-alone would be ok, but with 40 acres of hillside timberland, it would have to be towed (dragged) around a lot. I settled on this one on ebay, and picked it up at the...

I need a push to make up my mind. I have an IH 3414 industrial loader tractor (gas) with a 3 point and PTO. I've been told it's about a 38 HP 1958 model, as it has the flat top rear fenders. I bought it with a model 55 Kelley backhoe on it 14 years ago for $5000, to clean up 40...

    Another newbie here

I just found this site last week, and have spent way too much time looking at the "Build-It Yourself" pages. Always been a farm boy who likes playing with tractors.
