    Bolens 1668 pto clutch misalignment

I didn’t even think about checking if the engine shifted forward. I hope not because the bolts are impossible to get to on these

Do you know how I would go about diagnosing any of those possibilities?

    Bolens 1668 pto clutch misalignment

I have a Bolens 1668 that’s been working great for me. Last week I was mowing, then I shut the pto off for 30-45 seconds or so, and it didn’t engage when I tried flipping the switch. Upon further inspection, I found the pto assembly was very hot. Once it cooled down, it turned back on without...

    Bolens reliability

I appreciate the suggestions. I ended up grabbing a medium frame 1668 with all the attachments I wanted. Mower, tiller, snowblower, wheel weights, and a cab. Guy took a strait up trade for my 15-20 year old plastic craftsman in pretty beat up condition. I got the 1668 running beautifully, and...

    Bolens reliability

I have been thrilled with my bolens g274 TLB and recently found myself wanting to exchange my garbage craftsman riding mower for something by bolens. I am aware that anything built in the last two decades is junk, but how much further do I need to go back before they turned to garbage? I would...

    Bolens 1668 hydro

I have the option to buy a 1668 hydro in non-running condition. The guy said all it needs is a starter motor gear, clean gas, and pump a tire up. Been sitting for 3 years and looks pretty rough. He wants $350. I don’t know exactly how I can confirm that’s all it needs, but if that’s the case...

Do you have any water in the fluid? Is it milky at all?

    Cold weather and hydraulic pump

As I’ve never broken a hydraulic pump I don’t know what to look for besides the hydraulics not working. Do you think I damaged it?

    Cold weather and hydraulic pump

First time I tried to start up my old bolens g274 tractor from the mid 80’s this winter. Temps were below freezing for more than 24 hours beforehand. Around 20-25°f when I tried yesterday. She started just fine, as well as she ever does, but there was immediately a high pitch noise. Went to...

    Hydraulic hose bulge

That’s a bit of a hike but a solid plan b. I found one labeled “female JIC (37 DEG 7/16-20 thread”. Think that’s the one?

    Hydraulic hose bulge

It looked like there might’ve been some Teflon around the threads. If I’m not mistaken these shouldn’t be put on with any sealant or tape right?

    Hydraulic hose bulge

Couldn’t find one at TS. Seems they have mostly 1/2” and I need 1/4” so I’ll order one online tonight. What are these fittings called? Both ends of the hose are female and have a flared in shoulder.

    Hydraulic hose bulge

I did come across such warnings in the manual. Apparently if you get hydraulic fluid under your skin it is a huge deal, and not something you should just “rub some dirt on”.

    Hydraulic hose bulge

Thanks for the replies. Gonna head to TS this week and see if I can’t find something to throw on there. Probably due for a fluid change anyways so I’m not too upset about it, especially being that she didn’t bust her guts all over the only pair of pants I have without holes in them.

    Hydraulic hose bulge

Got this old backhoe last year for pennies. First thing I did was new filter and fresh transdraulic fluid. Probably put on 20 hours last year and an hour this week. Today I just needed to dig a small hole to plant a tree. I was able to finish the hole, pack it up and put the tractor back in its...

Is frequent short term use harmful?

Please forgive my ignorance but why run it at least 2000 rpm? Is that just so it heats up enough?

Is frequent short term use harmful?

Thank you all for the replies. Can you help me to understand why water would be in the oil if I use it for short periods? Does something about a short use draw more water in? Or what I think would be more likely is that the oil wouldn’t get hot enough to boil the water away that just condenses...

Is frequent short term use harmful?

good morning all. I’ve found myself using my tractor pretty often but only for very short periods of time. It got me thinking that maybe it could be causing some sort of harm but I don’t really know. I’m basically using it to turn a compost pile. Lazy or not, my back isn’t what it used to be. Is...

White lithium grease on cylinder rods

Thank you all for the replies. I’m hoping because it’s from the mid or early 80’s that it has a nice thick chrome plating on it, but I won’t take any more chances with the sanding. I suppose I’ll just leave it as is for now and let you all know how it turns out in a couple years time.

White lithium grease on cylinder rods

TLB is all bolens from the 80’s. I don’t know how to tell if it’s chrome plated or 5030 but an uneducated guess would be plated. The wax idea sounds interesting… what say you all about that?

White lithium grease on cylinder rods

Thank you for the fast response. The reason I started coating them is because I noticed a lot of small rust pits developing on them. Nothing is really leaking yet. And being that I bought the whole TLB combo for less than a new hydraulic piston I was just hoping to extend the life without any...

White lithium grease on cylinder rods

I have a TLB and sometimes it goes many months without use. I used to wipe some grease on the cylinder rods if I knew it would be in storage for a while. Today I didn’t have any tube grease that I usually use so I sprayed on some white lithium grease. It occurred to me after the fact that it...

    Too much trans/hydraulic fluid??

So I reached out to two people on Craigslist who were selling the bolens g274 and they sent me pictures of their dipsticks. They’re pretty similar but there is some discrepancy between them. Looks like the rubber piece at the top can slide up and down which makes the stick either longer or...

    Too much trans/hydraulic fluid??

I’m pretty sure there’s only one hydraulic filter. It’s more of a metal screen than a filter I’d say. Think it’s called a strainer? Anyways I changed that, the oil filter, and the fuel filter. I tried to change the air filter but the part I ordered didn’t fit so that’s coming. Do you happen to...

    Too much trans/hydraulic fluid??

shoved a stainless tig welding rod down there and it was about 165mm from where the rubber stopper should go. Maybe about an inch higher than I think it should be.

    Too much trans/hydraulic fluid??

Thank you oldnslo. I’ll get to it tomorrow and let you know how it goes. My biggest worry will be not having enough fluid in there. I wanted to change the fluid again after maybe only 20 hours or so to get the rest of that hydraulic fluid out. When I do I’ll only put the 9.5 gallons in and mark...

    Too much trans/hydraulic fluid??

So I found a picture of an aftermarket dipstick (out of stock of course) and it looks much longer than the one that’s in there. Picture below. They were kind enough to post dimensions. Total length is 230mm and from the rubber is 200mm. Mine is maybe 2.5-3 inches. What I wouldn’t give for an...

    Too much trans/hydraulic fluid??

If it is the wrong dipstick could it do much damage being overfull? Or would it just leak out somewhere
  36. C

    Too much trans/hydraulic fluid??

Newbury, yes I changed the filter, but it is small, maybe a pint or so. I don’t believe the manual stated any attachments so I’m assuming the capacity is without the loader.

    Too much trans/hydraulic fluid??

Haha thank you for that. Yeah I know sometimes the oil can look very clear. But this thing was dry as a bone. It’s brand new to me so the dipstick could very well be the issue here. I thought it was a little odd being so short. I just did a quick search for a bolens g274 dipstick and came up...

How much fluid does the loader account for?

Yeah, the fill port is right in the center console area, and the dipstick is right next do it. The people I bought it from used straight hydraulic fluid in there for years so I wanted to get it out asap. I noticed when running it like that it foamed up and poured out the shifter so I don’t...

    Too much trans/hydraulic fluid??

I didn’t check anything deeper than the 3 inch dipstick would tell me, but that’s a good idea to see how much more I need. I put in an extra 3/4 gallon of the stuff tho. Could it be off by that much, or do you think the loader could be needing the extra fluid? I didn’t do anything special...

How much fluid does the loader account for?

I went to change the fluid in my “new to me” tractor. The manual says the transmission holds 34.5 liters, about 9.5 gallons. I put in 10 gallons of transmission/hydraulic fluid and it doesn’t even register on the dipstick. I ran around in a panic thinking I must’ve had the filter off or...

    Too much trans/hydraulic fluid??

I have an older tractor with a loader. Bolens g274 to be specific. I went to do a fluid change. Manual says 34.5 liters. I put in a whole 10 gallons (37.8 liters) and it still doesn’t register on the dip stick. What am I missing? I checked for leaks and it all looks good.

    Air Filter for Bolens G274/2704/TE4270

Hey rob, did you ever find a number for the air filter? I have the g274 too and I can’t seem to find a number. Only those crazy expensive ones from Sam bolens or overseas with $45 shipping

    Gear oil

Bugwizard, you say you’re changing the hydraulic oil filter. Do you mean you’re putting in a new strainer element or are you changing it out for another filter altogether? I ask because I’m having issues with my g274 strainer. The mechanic tore the old one up (I have no idea how) and put the...

    New rims for bolens tractor

Not that I know of. I thought I found one guy over in Maine but he only dealt with those small lawn tractors. Had a whole heaping pile of wheels that were useless to me lol. Good guy tho, he might come in handy another day for something else so at least it wasn’t a wasted trip. I’m pretty sure...

    New rims for bolens tractor

Thanks for that. Yeah I looked for rims for iseki too and couldn’t come up with anything. I need rear and front but the rear are in worse shape. I saw in another forum that kubota rims might fit but idk how to make sure before I order them.

    New rims for bolens tractor

I have a bolens G274 with some pretty rusted out rims. Especially the part where the valve stem is. I can poke the inner tube with my finger. Does anyone have a place I can find replacement rims? The tires currently on there are 355/80D20. They are a bit dry rotted but still look useable, but I...

Where is the transmission/hydraulic drain plug/plugs for bolens g274?

I need to change the trans/hydraulic fluid in my bolens g274 (same as iseki te4270) and do not have the manual. Does anyone know where I can find the right bolts to drain it? I heard there might be two in the rear and one in the center but i would like to be more certain of the locations before...

    Bolens g274 filters and oil

You’re not kidding. He even took the screen out of the one hydraulic filter. The one with the magnet on it. Then he screwed the housing back on and didn’t tell anyone there was no filter inside.

    Bolens g274 filters and oil

thank you guys for the replies. I was able to find that part number for the hydraulic screen in the parts catalog, but unfortunately that is the only filter that it mentions (besides the air filter). The reason I can’t take the old filters to the shop to match up is the lady had a guy work on it...

    Bolens g274 filters and oil

Hey all, First time poster, long time stalker. I’m buying a bolens G274 (or 2704). From what I understand it’s the exact same machine as an iseki te4270. I emailed iseki and wouldn’t you believe it, they just sent me the manual. Beats paying $100 from some other places. But I couldn’t find a...
