Just listened to that song again about 2 days ago and it had me thinking about this thread Mr. MossRoad.

Who pays for the tug services? Is it the Port, or the Ship?

Wonder what the cost in downtime is for the mechanical delays? Searched but no metrics found for the commercial daily rate for a laker.

As a kid, pretty sure it was the Welland that we went to and watched boats traverse the locks. My grandfather was into viewing big engineering projects, so coal powerplants, locks, old forts, even nuclear powerplant sites were all targets for a road trip.

Floating bath tubs! I grew up east of Rochester NY, and about 5 miles from Lake Ontario. The lake is wide enough there that one can't see the other side, so more like the ocean than a lake. We would watch the Lakers heading back and forth to the St. Lawrence, but they were out far enough to...

There's got to be some pucker factor in running an ice breaker... How often have you gotten stuck in a 4wd vehicle...generally not often, but when it does occur, you're pretty well stuck! Same for an ice breaker...I wonder if they ever get stuck on ice that is thicker than expected, or that...

Interesting...so perhaps it IS a thoughtful design. A situation of identifying your requirements, and then developing a solution that best achieves them... Thanks Mr. Arly!

Just observational thinking... Interesting how the Gott has just a "wrap around" bow. No curves or apparent fluid dynamics design. Likely a trade off to create the most storage area possible. Wonder if the potential inefficiency of the design (for fuel consumption) is compensated by the added...

What do you think is the ballpark cost for a Tug to do a "little swing by" to break ice?

The PI must have been in some serious wave action to have ice formation like that...impressive photo!

That water must be hovering at 32 degrees to hold ice as in the photos. Guessing everyone is monitoring temperature forecasts pretty closely. What's the window of risk for freezing up and hindering boat traffic? Can it freeze up in a few hours, or is it more likely over a couple of days...

I'm surprised with the wave action that you develop ice this early. I remember big wind blown ice chunks pushed up along the shore line of Lake Ontario, but not frozen over hard ice out on the lake.
