..............................but I gotta wonder why so many screw around with these 3-4-5" snows.....doesn't anyone drive 4x4 trucks anymore?

I screw around with them for two reasons:

1. Although I wouldn't be without a 4WD, not everyone has one. Plus having 4WD doesn't help old ladies walk through the icy church parking lot.

2. I'm a 69 year old kid (who loves to play with equipment, as you already mentioned). :)

Every vehicle I own is 4 wheel drive. But if you don't keep up with the snow it will continue to build up.....then in the spring it is a complete mess that even a 4 wheel drive would not go through.

Edit;
OK, my Harley is not a 4 wheel drive. :laughing:

Plus the more snow you leave the more turns to ice during a warm up (like will happen in northen MI this weekend. And the more snow left, makes for more problems melting during spring break up. Jon

A lot of nice rigs here. I know we like to get out and play in the snow, but I gotta wonder why so many screw around with these 3-4-5" snows.....doesn't anyone drive 4x4 trucks anymore?

Spoken by one who has not been through many winters where the small layer of snow either melts and then freezes OR that gets rained on and then turns to ice when it freezes.. Both situations where one wishes the snow layer had been removed when it was possible to do that.

Personally, I try to scrape down to asphalt before it packs down into a sheet of ice. And per the town laws I need to clear the sidewalk, so if I have to go out for that I might as well take a few passes over parking area and driveway.

Opening up a path to the front door last night. To quote Corb Lund I "did my very best to refrain from, shoveln...".

I let the small snows accumulate the first winter we moved here. It sure looked nice and was nice to drive on (yes 4WD) but Spring came on suddenly and then the thick layer of snow turned to slush and my 4WD couldn't get out on the flat part of the driveway. If it wasn't for the tractor I'm not sure what I would have done. Lesson learned. Keep it bare. Besides with the new cab tractor I can't wait to get out there. I'm sure that will wear off though (or not).:)

Anything 3” and less stays on the driveway and I just pack it down. We have nothing but 4x4 or AWD here, so snow or ice doesn’t bother us. I’ll often have to plow out the mailbox, otherwise USPS will put a note in the box saying they won’t deliver, but won’t put my mail in there! (Ironic, no?)

Wife’s car is a Subaru Impreza, fairly low to the ground. Anything over 4” gets plowed on the main drive area, not the other driveway though. That doesn’t get plowed until 5+” because I’m the only one who uses it.

Edit: ice on the roads is no fun. Ice in our driveway is actually kinda fun, and not dangerous. I’ll sand if need be, but otherwise it doesn’t really bother us. The less gravel I move around during the winter months means less raking it back in the spring.

I hear you. Around here the county throw cinders on the road for a 1" dusting.
