Good morning friends!

I recently inherited a ‘55 860. Prior to acquiring it I have run this tractor many times doing light bush hogging, grading driveway etc. To my knowledge the engine has not been torn down since it has been in the family. Motor doesn’t seem to run too hot, only one time on a hot summer day after did the gauge ever read hot, however it has ALWAYS dieseled on hot shut down since I have known it. I have check engine temp with a heat gun multiple times when it diesels and it’s never overly hot.

the other day I removed the hood to repair a leaky fuel shutoff, and figured since I had it down that far I may as well replace the leaky valve cover gasket. A friend suggest I check the valve clearances, so I did, all were in spec or very close (0.015” cold). In the video I watched on the process prior to doing all of this (Video by the Gingells) I noticed they discuss an oil tube running to the rocker shaft that my tractor does not have. It has the short tube running to the head, not the longer one that runs across and down in the block.

Are there 172 engines that lack this tube? I’m thinking there’s no way these valves would still be in adjustment after many years of use if it wasn’t getting the proper oiling to the rockers. I’m getting no metal in the oil, no chatter, nothing abnormal at all about the way this tractor runs with the exception of it diesel at shutoff
