I have a 2002 Dodge 2500 diesel (24 valve). Wondering if I can use 0-40 wt synthetic oil year round (light duty service only 0

The 0-40 oil will work just fine. Just make sure its rated for diesels as mentioned.

Nothing wrong with it. Who makes it and what is the cost? 5w40 seems to be a lot more widely available and cheaper.

2006 Dodge Sprinter (5 cylinder Mercedes diesel) ... 430,000+ miles ... it's never seen anything but Mobil 1 0w40 European Car Formula ... except for one oil change where I ran some Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck ...

Service has included running in -20F temps ... to weeks spent in Laredo and El Paso, TX where the highs were 110F+ on a daily basis for weeks on end ...

It's good oil.

I buy 0W-40 from John Deere and use it in everything but my quad. I do a lot of heavy towing year round with my 98 Cummins.

I forgot about the Deere 0-40. It is good oil.

As said in my previous reply I see nothing wrong with a 0-40 but I don't see any real advantage over a 5-40 unless you are on the north slope or something.

Wal mart has both rotella and delo 5-40 for less than $20 a gallon. Last I checked the Deere 0-40 was $30.

If you have some laying around by all means use it but I wouldn't spend extra for it.

Around here, Rotella T6 is available in 0W40. Priced similar to T6 5W40.

I'd use either one, going 0W if you see a lot of -30C and lower days.

Petro Canada's Duron is another good line, and I'm pretty sure they have a 0W40 too.

Yep, it's in their -E line:

C for commercial

S for service

To the op, 5w40 is a common syn oil here in warm Florida, many of us run it in our diesel pickups, depending on need.

Not sure the above makes sense. The labels don't describe the function. "Commercial" "Service" are not accurately descriptive since either can be diesel or gasoline.

C for compression ignition

S for spark ignition

is what I learned some time ago. Probably not worth debating but I'd like to see your source for reference.
