I am prepareing to paint a 1940s mccormick deering and i have been sand blasting it but there are still little peeks and pits and rough spots all the blasting is doing is removeing old paint and rust, so i was wondering how i could remove these little mountins and pits> I thought about touch up grinding but dont want to do anything dumb so i am in need of ideas, thanks.:(

I like to use the orbital sander on the body metal after sandblasting to remove the little mountains and then use a body filler for the pits then sand over the filler to get a smooth surface. I try to avoid grinding as one quick oops and the hood could be in two halves. One thing I hate that people do on old equipment is smooth out the cast parts. Casting were originally rough from the factory and making them smooth with out the imperfections takes away from the character and to most folks the value as it is no longer original.

Any pictures of the work done on it so far?

100_0322.jpg100_0326.jpgThank you alot you saved me a mess, i will leave the cast rough that was my main worry. would a sand blaster then filler work on tin? Here is what i have done to it, i just started a couple days ago and work on it when i can.

Yes, A sandblaster then filler should work on tin. Remember tin is fairly soft and the sandblaster will eat it away fairly quickly and distort it from the pressure if set to high.

Thank you alot, this was my grand fathers tractor he bought it in the early 40s and used it to fill a silo and would love to see it do its job again.

It is great to have an antique tractor, but it is even more special when it was used for years by a family member. Any picture of before you took it apart.
