I have recently purchased a 09 F150. I was unable to find one with a factory brake controller equipped like I wanted it. The dealer agreed to include the brake controller and installation as part of the deal. The dealer installed the controller this week. Last night I hooked up my trailer which has brakes. The controller does not light up as described in the manual. I understand that the controller has to be programmed to work with the truck痴 computer which the dealer says they did. The controller lights up momentarily when the truck is started but does nothing after that. My question is to any 09 or 10 F150 owners with a factory brake controller. Should the brake controller light up when the trailer is connected? Also, I want to make sure the problem is with the truck and not the trailer. I bought the trailer in April and have been pulling it with a truck not equipped with a controller. If I understand correctly the display should read 鍍railer not connected if I use the manual function and there no trailer connected. Is this true?

Have not dealt with a F-150 with the factory brake controller but have done so on many Super Duty Fords and 100's of aftermarket ones.

Do the brake lights, turn signals, and running lights work on the trailer? Now with a helper have them start the truck and using a multi-meter check the pin at the 1 and 7 o'clock position. You should have 12 volts. Now with the helper holding the brakes have them put it in reverse and check the center pin and the pin at 7 o'clock, you should have 12 volts once again with it in reverse. None of this has to do with the brakes yet, just checking the basics.

Now on to the brakes. With the black lead of your multi-meter on the pin at the 7 o'clock position the red lead of the multi-meter on the pin at the 4 o'clock position and have the helper put the controller on a setting of 5 or so and have them step on the brakes. You should see about 7 volts or so. Now have them turn the controller all the way up and check again the same way and you should see 12 volts or so if all is ok.

If this checks out its your trailer.

Thanks Chis. The trailer lights do work. I will try your suggestion and report back.
