Anyone changing their driving patterns?

What a deal! I just bought a barrel of oil for ~$900!! Of course, its 55 gallons of Shell Rotella 5w40.;)
It must not be too high yet, last I filled up it was me (k3500 4x4 diesel) then an Excursion at the next pump, an older Chevy P/U on the other side, a few other SUVs and one or two compacts. All the pumps were occupied and people were still pulling in. And this was at 3AM after I got off work.

Paul: If fuel keeps going up, I think all of will be changing our pattern. Leaving it parked. Already, fuel is my biggist expense. I dont know how much more a contractor can stand. Already condstuction in our area has slowed down dramatically. Many home owners are not having those small jobs done any more. I hauled a small load of limestome for a customer yesterday and the fuel charge was almost as much as the limestome. Ive tried to consilodate trips and make every trip count.

I drive the Honda Civic as much as I can and only use the diesel pickup when I need a pickup - But I've been doing that for a long time.

Took the bike to the horse stables today - 8 mile round trip, but that was to keep the weight down, not due to fuel :)

Don't forget a barrel of crude is 42 US Gallons not 55.

$100 bucks a barrel is a certainty as long as the US Dollar continues it's free fall against other international currencies.

In 2000, it cost me 82 cents to buy a Euro and last month I paid $1.48 with fees for some parts I am buying from Germany.

Even our neighbors to the North in Canada are finding many bargains in the States due the exchange rate.

Yes, much of the story for oil prices is really the slide of the US dollar rather than a real spike in oil costs. If you buy with Euros or Yen it's not as bad. Maybe this will finally kick the Chinese into letting the Yuan float.

Glad I bought a flex fuel vehicle - just gotta wait for cellulosic ethanol to become practical and on the market (corn ethanol is a dead-end, IMHO).

I don't want fuel to get so high but there might be a silver lining.

Here's my theory, if it gets high enough, it will push more people into buying small cars as a primary vehicle. If enough do it, demand will drop substantially and the price will come back down but folks will have their small cars and hopefully keep using them.

I changed my driving habits at the Katrina spike. No more unnecessary driving for me. I also bought a woodstove to use as the primary heat source in my house..... the past two winters i've used less than 120 gals. per winter.

IMO, the argument that many of us going out and buying economy cars will drop the price of gas is foolish. Oil producers will cut production to keep prices high. They have tasted the blood, and will not go back to $200/gal gas.... EVER !

Not sure what the answer is. Some other energy source. Unrealistic in the near future, for sure. I give the crooks as little as possible, and have for several years.

Free market, eh ??

I drive 50 miles one way so I had to park the dodge diesel. I bought a Chevy metro that gets 40 mpg.
I heard that heating oil is going to be at an all time high price this winter ( go figure ) I seen that writing on the wall 6 years ago when I built my house so I went and bought a multi fuel boiler and put it in my garage. I burn 90% coal and 10% #2 diesel in it. last year I paid $250 to heat my 3,500 sq. ft not very well insulated log home that sits on top of a wind swept mountain.

I am also looking into powering my house with micro hydro. i have a very nice stream about 200 yards from the house. According to my calculations I should be able to make enough KW to power my whole house.

I am also in the beginning stages of making my own diesel for the tractors and maybe even the Dodge.

Nothing better than being able to tell the middle east that I don't need their oil so they can go and shove their outragious prices :)
