But I have heard for a long time that one can taste the state of auto transmission fluid (in effect a type of hydraulic oil, right?). Wonder if that applies to tractor Hydro oil....
And when we get to really using cooking oil, etc, in our tractors, how about tasting that...which chicken place did it come from, if they'd cooked a lot of wings in it would your machine move faster....

Human senses are pretty worthless for oil testing unless you get some edumacation, BUT, here's some more info. Diptstickin'
On Noria's site, search blotter test and surface tension test. You can get a great idea, VERY cheaply and quickly as to the condition of your oil. Once you get an idea of how long your oil last, you can quit wasting money on too frequent oil changes. Oil's not getting any cheaper, and if everyone extended their change just a little bit, well that could add up to millions of gallons saved.

I love oil threads whether on this site or the motorcycle forums that I follow. You can tell the europeans from the americans everytime. I have a FJR1300 Yamaha and the oil changes in the US are 2000 miles less than in Europe with the exact same spec oils required. Americans have also had a need to change our oil more than needed. In Europe, most cars call for changes at 7500 to 10,000 miles.
For a tractor you are not talking about alot of oil, but the change intervals are conservative. Check out the Kubota manual from different countries and the change interval will be different.
We have Ford fleet vehicles and the intervals are listed at 7500 miles while the 'civilian' models which are identical state to change at 4000.
Follow the manuals is my rule, but I think that you can blow by the recommended interval with little risk.

Matt, I concour. It's funny how we will quickly admonish a company for protecting themselves against failure by perscribing early preventive maintenance yet question them when they call for an oil change at 5000, 7500 etc. miles or in this case, 100 hours. Now we know we know more then them? My brother in law changes oil on his Toyota when it gets discolored. He still changes the plugs at 15,000 miles. If he needs a bolt because one broke or fell out, he goes to Toyota to get a replacement. Talk about ****. I certainly can see the merit to oil testing to let one know exacly how far you can go before needing a change. It makes sense both economically and enviromentally.
