I have a 68 Deere 1020 that I bought from a guy who said it sat for 10 years. She has some issues that I am trying to work through. I am mechanically inclined but a novice with tractors.

Right now I am working on hyd. Steering leak. I have discovered a lot of water in the hydraulic system while working on this. Aside from the norm, draining the fluid, changing the filter and cleaning the sump screen is there anything else I should do take sure I get all of the old fluid out? I have some guidance from a neighbor with a 4020.

If it really does have lots of water in the hydraulic fluid, after you install a new shifter boot (one source of water migration), and after you change the fluid, the tractor might like a few hours of bush hogging to heat up the oil. Then change the oil again. Your call of course. I just bush hogged for a few hours. It was a light amount of cutting but the PTO output shaft was warm to hot. Hot is good to help steam off condensate assuming that somewhere in the system it is really hot and not just hot to touch. I do not know if your tractor would get the fluid hot enought to steam off any of the left over moisture.

I agree with Jim on replacing the two shifter boots. Other than that you sound like you are on the right track. It may take some repairs to get it straightened out but a 1020 is a good tractor. I refurbished an 820 about 15 years ago with some similar issues after sitting for a few years. Good luck with the project.

Thanks. I will get it all drained out this week and order new shift boots. Will update when I get it all done.

And get the service technical manual, if you don't already have it for the 1020. ;)

OP: If you would like to see the service manual, send me a PM with your email address, I'll share a service manual I purchased, scanned and hosted on my google drive.

Along with new shifter boots check breather in hyd filler cap for plugging which will not let any moisture evaporate when hyd heats up.

I have the little I&T shop manual. Is that what you have or the big service one?

Finally getting back around to working on the rust bucket. I have all of the fluids drained out. The drain plugs look like they may have had a washer or o ring on them that rotted or possibly is just a collection of grease and dirt. Does anyone know if they need a washer or seal of any kind? I can't find anything in the manual.

Thanks
