Jaotguy- your solution seems like elegant overkill (to me anyway, mind you- although I like it non the less) to his problem. I would be concerned about all the additional circuitry's potential to create a problem down the road. A simple, mechanical temp. gauge is unlikely to do that, and should be fairly easy to screw in somewhere? His tractor will have a temp. sensor for the idiot light, and that's where I would start looking for a way to plumb in the new gauge's probe or sending unit.
