4020 John Deere tractor
Have been working on tractor and need some help .we ran out of diesel on this tractor and after refueling and bleeding out system the tractor blows black smoke we checked compression and it ranged from 380 to 420 thought that's ok
Checked injector timing also because not only smoke but tractor will not shut down with lever like it used to in fact we have to break injector line on #3 cylinder to shut down. When running it starts running faster on its own . It's eating my lunch ! Does anybody have any ideas

Sounds a little like the rack on the injector pump is sticking.

The only other thing I can think of,would be that the Turbo could be leaking oil.Easy to check, just pull off a hose.My foot throttle gets stuck, and needs oil,or it wont shut off,but this sounds like a run away.

Does the 1050 have a compression release? That will shut it down if all else fails.

I assume you have tried pushing the linkage forward right at the governor. I had to add a forward-pull spring on my YM186D throttle linkage, before the throttle lever at zero would kill the engine.

I am with the guys that think its something in the pump sticking.

There really isn't any way it could be anything but that except Barry's idea of possibly oil getting thru the turbo that is a very good idea! He could take the turbo hose off at the intake side behind the balance box and see if its soaked with oil.

SO, was this running like this before you ran it out of fuel? Did you test drive it and it ran fine? Have you purchased this tractor yet? I was following your other threads so i know you were looking at it to buy.

Now you say that clemson... it does sound like more than they "just ran out of fuel" considering they pulled all the injectors etc and went so far as to ck compression and un-moveable inj timing. I know I wouldn't go that far unless I suspected major issues not related to simply running her out of fuel. I hope we can help nontheless but like you said it is odd. my .002

I agree i really dont think that its that they did not get it "bled". Its just really strange that, it was running fine then ran out of fuel and then now its running like its out of time or down an injector??

Do you have a fuel filter, could it of sucked trash out of the bottom of the tank when it ran dry. Reason i ask about filter is that if it did not have one it could of passed this through the system, taking out an injector? Heck i dont know, im a novice, listen to what CD says hes the expert.

I have a 1050 and it just quit on me after cleaning out the fuel tank and filter bowl. I suspect that it may have gotten trash into the injector pump and plugged it up so I was going to pull the injector pump and clean it but need to know what the timing sequence is when I pull it so it will be in time when I put it back. Any ideas?

Do you know you are getting fuel to the pump? Pretty sure your pump is timed with the amount of shims behind it. If you go back with the same shims it should be in time. Be careful removing the pump so as not to damage your governor and linkage.
