I was looking at purchasing a Massey 1080 whti FEL at a good price. The tractor was for sale at a dealer, the dealer had just taken it in as a trade. Started and ran fine but I couldn't get the PTO to engage. I would mark it up to the fact that the labels missing and my not being sure how to engage the PTO. However another possible buyer was just leaving when I arrived and the seller said they had tried the PTO and it wouldn't engage. I looked at it for about 20 minutes looking it over and trying to get the PTO to engage but had no luck. The guy that had left a few minutes before returned and he had spoken to a friend of his who also had a 1080 and had given him a few things to try. We were still unsuccessful getting it to engage. He said the friend told him it was most likely a shear pin in the PTO clutch and the tractor would need to be split to fix.
It was quite a bit bigger than what I was looking for but I really like the FEL and the price is pretty good. The possibility of clutch issues and not having heavy enough equipment to split this large of a tractor myself led me to pass on the tractor.
I just checked and it's still available. The dealer did mention in passing that the previous owner had the tractor for 5+ years and only used the tractor to move hay bales and never used the PTO. Just wondering if it may be something other than the clutch or shear pin. I looked at the area where the PTF lever enters the transfer case there are two hoses that I assume are hydraulic hoses. Is the PTO engaged hydraulically? I seem to remember another post about a PTO not engaging because the check balls were stuck due to non use, but I can稚 find the post now. Looking if it痴 possible that this could be fixed without splitting the tractor.
