For those that like to stick a trailer ball thru their drawbar and still havn't ponied up and bought or built a stay to keep the drawbar from rotating, you really need to thro one together.

I've built a couple types from using items out of the scrap iron bin. Both have been tested with my 8n and naa on a 1800# trailer.. carrying up to 1600# of load.

These were made with a stick welder and throw away materials. You have no excuse not to have a stay on your drawbar if you tote a trailer /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

They aren't pretty .. but they work.. and the drawbar doesn't rotate and put pressure on the ball or trailer hitch....

Soundguy,

Have you seen one of these? My dad bought it sometime in the sixties to use on our 9N, and most recently I've used it on a Ford 2000. I sold the 2000 when I bought my John Deere and now the stay won't fit on the John Deere 3PH arms. So I think I will be making one like yours. Thanks for the idea.

Tom

Yep.. it was a common design. I believe there is a company called redrock manufacturing that is making a 'repro' one similar to that.

One of these days I'm going to try to find one like that, but for now.. my freebie welded up ones work fine.

That little sheetmetal one was made with 1/4 flat, and 4 ears welded on it. i also used a large washer to center the stay on the drawbar and keep it from coming off.

The rebar one was made with a bent rebar section, and 2 short i-beam sections. The ibeam section over the brawbar has a bolt welded to it that goes threu the drawbar and is held on with a large washer and nut. The portion on the lift arm is also a ibeam section, and has a large 'D' bolt welded to it. Uou slide it onthe arm, and then add the backing plate to the d-bolt and add the two nuts... The sheetmetal one I made is much easier if you have a torch and welder. That first one I made I was just playing around.. however both work fine.

That will make an excellent first project when I get my welder. Thanks for the photos.

You gave me an Idea, I will make one, maybe tonight, no welding involved.

Yep.. i think you could cut and bend.. or if you can mill or cast.. amke a thicker one with a relieved area for the drawbar.. and the holes. either would work.
