Some friends bought a reconditioned 110 JD with a 10hp Kohler engine that was supposed to be completely rebuilt. The second time they used it, the connecting rod went out of the engine. Can a different brand of 10 hp engine be put on this unit? Where is a good source for finding a low cost replacement? I have the tractor at my home and am trying to help them out as economically as possible. Thank you for the help.

Some of the JD lawn tractors come with Briggs & Straton engines. You might check on one of those. But don't let one rebuilders blunder sour you on Kohler. They make some of the best small engines in the world. I have a JD 130 23hp and a 175 psi Ingersol Rand compressor with a 12.5 hp Kohler engine.

What kind of damage occurred here? Did the rod break the block or nick the crankshaft? If the answer to either of these is yes, they would be better off with a short block. Check this
site,

I have had real good luck with small engines from them. I have not had real good luck trying to repower with different engines, always run into muffler/electrical/carb problems. Any way every time I try to save a nickel it costs me fifty bucks. Good luck /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have the 17 hp Kohler in my old Wheelhorse and it is rugged. I'm just afraid to try and rebuild this engine again. I haven't torn it down but there isn't any visible damage to the block on the outside. The starter turns the crankshaft but the piston isn't moving up and down so I assume the rod is broken. The friend using when it blew up said that the mower was idling and there was a loud "pop" when it quit. I think that Kohler makes some of the best engines out there, they are very expensive to replace though. This mower was purchased for $500 and only used twice and I wanted to save these folks some money if possible. Thanks for the timely responses and your help.

This isn't the "L" series 110 from Home Depot is it? Sounds more like a Deere 110 garden tractor from the 1960's? Then I'd scrounge a replacement Kohler from somewhere (check www.weekendfreedommachines.org classifieds) and repower it, unless the current block is salvageable. Sounds like the guy that rebuilt this should step up and contribute towards the cost of the repair. You can also check out this site:

I don't know what the budget will tolorate, but this tractor is not junk to be thrown away. Even though over 30 years old, they are sought after and their parts have value. Again I refer you to the Weekend Freedom Machines site. Best of luck!
