I had been having clutch issues with my tractor, like the clutch was not fully dissengaging. Tried to adjust it every which way...still after about an hour of pushing snow, the gears would clash, not too bad, but bad enough that I was planning to split the tractor this spring and replace the clutch.

So, yesterday I am pushing snow ( we got 17 inches overnight) and I hit a rock!!! Hard!!! tractor stops dead, wheels spin, tractor goes again, rough ride!! I push in the clutch and think to myself "that does not feel right..." but, upon putting it in reverse..no gear clash...I push snow for another 20 minutes, and no clash.....took it out again (more snow...) ran it for 2 hours...no clash....It had to be the old yanmar rusted clutch issue and the rock must been enough to break it loose!! life is good again, and now I always block the clutch pedal down when ever I park it.

I hope anyone else having clutch issues first considers if the clutch is rusted....I would have never thought that this was my problem...happy it was and it fixed itself. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

COngrats on your self healing tractor. I have split a few tractors over the years for stuck clutches. The one that really stumped me was a YM1500. Split the tractor, popped the disk loose from the flywheel and put it back together. Started it up and the gears grind. Clutch was still stuck? Hmm, split the dang tractor again, verified that I had not spilled Krazy Glue on the clutch while I was in there. OK no Krazy Glue, put tractor back together. Cranked it up and the gears are still grinding. I let that tractor sit for a few days then split it again. I was sitting there with the jack shaft in my hand with the clutch disk on it when I tried to slide the disk off. What, the disk is stuck? Just enough rust on the splines to keep the shaft from sliding. A couple of light taps on the end of the shaft freed it. I cleaned it up, put it back together and she worked perfectly. My wife was not nearly as impressed with my mechanical prowess when I went in to wake her up at midnight to tell her how great I was.
