Yanmar 1110d
Please understand-I have common sense comparable to a box of wet hair.

I was just reading some pretty old yanmar posts and I ran across something about the 1110D being a powershift. I keep seeing posts about the powershift being a truly great transmission, and was thrilled to learn that mine was. I seem to have a clacking noise when cruising around in high-range. (I have mentioned it before in an earlier post). Should I worry, or try to do something about it, I mean the tractor moves around ok, there is just a slight clacking.

Could this be a "Throwout bearing" or something of the such?

Should I start with the basics and change the fluid and clean the filter? Could this have an effect?

And-
Should I clutch before changing gears when in 4WD?
And-
I havn't been able to locate the water pump. Is the fan belt just to turn the fan. I noticed that the hoses just run from the radiator to the block. Is there a thermostat?
And-
Just where is the Alternator? No problems, just don't see it.
And-
Is the thermostart easy to clean? That little bowl just has a gooey sludge in it! and it sure doesn't smell like diesel /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks,
Fred

Where is the clanking coming from on the tractor?
You do not have to clutch before changing gears when in 4WD.
There is not a waterpump. The alternator is behind the fan. The thermotart should be cleaned . Take it out & tap it up side down & blow it out with air.

Wow! thanks for the info.
The clacking seems to be coming from just under the powershift shifter, about 5 inches down. Somewhere in that area. i'm pretty sure it isn't coming from the far rear of the transmission.

Thanks,
Fred

Drain the trans fluid & check for metal. Bearing ? Gear?

When I got my YM1110D, I took the thermostart plug out and soaked it for a couple of days in diesel fuel. Then I rinsed it with clean fuel and let it dry. This seemed to clean it out pretty good.

Do you have the original air filter element (cleanable) or a paper replacement? The reason I ask is that the thermostart plug is very close to the air filter element. When the thermostart works, it creates a fire inside that tiny intake manifold. That fire is way too close to the air filter for me to be comfortable with a paper element filter.

After messing with mine (including replacing the bowl and hoses so that it is self filling from the injector return lines) I don't even use it because I have a paper filter. I put a lower radiator hose heater on mine. That was a pain, but in the end it worked out great. The tractor starts very easily after plugging in the heater for about 30 minutes. I attached a photo of the heater. I actually used a 3/4" NPT nipple, cut it at an angle, and had a buddy of mine weld it to some 1" thin wall pipe. Then I bought a 3/4" NPT freeze plug heater and installed it. From the photo, you can see that it is a very tight fit. If you get a chance, take a look at other photos of my Yanmars at my web page.

Thanks for the tips.

I have a paper air filter, but I believe I will try to clean the thermostart anyway, just in case. My tractor seems to crank only a little rougher in cold weather, not enough to really do some complaining.
--When cold, I have found it easier to crank with the throttle full and when it cranks I IMMEDIATELY return it to idle. Somtimes it dies because I idle it back down too fast, but I just can't stand seeing somebody rev the heck out of something when it first cranks ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S COLD!!
My mitsu has glow plugs, but doesn't have compression release, and it cranks excellent anytime. I guess i'm lucky.

--Should the tractor be as level as possible when draining the transmission fluid, or down hill a little? Is there more than on plug?

Thanks,
Fred

I find anything colder than 50F adversely effects the starting of my 1601d. I contemplated starting the tractor this AM at 15F and thought, maybe later!!! Now, with that being said, I haven't started my tractor in 5 weeks (or so)... But, I think that I'll need to start it soon 'cause of snow. Should I be concerned it won't start, or is 5 weeks not that long for a yanmar to sit???? (it's in a small barn, not heated) Thanks!!

I let mine sit that long. There is a little lever above your clutch pedal that is used to hold the pedal disengaged. The clutches can cease onto the pressure plate if left engaged too long. I would go ahead and get the thing started at least once a month. I fire mine up, let it warm slowly, find some chore to do with it and let it cool down. Then I shut her down and block the clutch. I also grease her up about that often. Most of the time I use it more often then monthly. Make sure you have enough antifreze. I put a tarp over my 2210 and use an oil filled electric radiator to warm it. That way it does no harm to start the thing. Takes a couple hrs bur I usually turn on the heat the night before. The cats like that anyway.

A diesel engine can sit for years. Fresh fuel and a charged battery and it will start like it sat for a week.
