Well, I started tearing the tractor down once again.

When I took the The PTO housing off I decided to turn the pto over by hand and see if I could locate where the noise was coming from. The rattle seems to be coming from the top gear (the one that the shaft from the clutch goes into). I can also grab ahold of this gear and move it in and out maybe 1/8 of an inch.

My question is...Is this play in the top gear normal? Do the spacers take up this? Or do I have another problem?

Also noticed a little play in the PTO output as well. Not as much as the input gear but there is a little there. It also looks as though the output is leaking a little.

Any help would be great

Found the problem!!!!! I turned each gear in the PTO housing by hand starting from the top input shaft and woring my way down. I removed each gear, checked the bearings and went to the next. The cluster gear had a little different feel to it and had a little suprise waiting for me at the other end.

The thrush washer on the housing side melted itself to the cluster gear. It also took out the housing bearing for the cluster gear. Parts are ordered and hopefully this machine will not eat another pto clutch. I have no idea how I overlooked this the last time I went through the bearings.

Ahhh yes, that looks nasty. Hopefully you won't have any problem finding the parts you need to fix it. Parts availability is a concern I have with my MF 1045 because it was built by Toyosha in Japan and they went out of business several years ago. Looks like you have your problem well under control. Good luck and thanks again for your help with my grinding/rattling transmission.

PS: I'd pay you the going rate to work on my tractor if you lived close to central Pennsylvania

I live about 45 minutes from the PA border. Just north of Binghamton.

I found a tractor salvage yard online that seems to have just about anything you need. It only took 3 days from my phone call to them to get the parts to me and the prices were very reasonable. If you ever have a hard time finding something, let me know.
