Sooooooo. you load the shotshell in the tractor and you hit it with a hammer....that's before you set it on fire......right?

I have no idea what just happened......but it was awesome.
And I thought I needed a new machine......
Seems like he's ready for an upgrade.....

Wait, I think you set it on fire FIRST! Then grab a hammer and smack
a shotgun shell for ignition!

I think a lot of older aircraft had an 8 gauge emergency start system when the electric starter/battery failed. Someone more familiar might be able to illuminate this a little more. I liked the firing pin and "hammer:)" system to fire that shell:laughing:

I'm not sure what I just watched. Is it diesel, steam or a combination of both? That is wild.

Geez that takes me back tooooooo many years. From memory the engine is a single cylinder 2 stroke laying flat and no thats not a shotgun cartridge,a 12 gauge won't fit. The wheel tractors could be started by putting the steering wheel onto the flywheel and turning over by hand but the engine had to be warm. The flame part of the prestart is parafin wax paper.
It was 54yrs ago when I last drove a Feild Marshall as a 9yr old on my Dads farm but remember it like yesterday...... I think. :D

A cartridge starting system is also fitted to the tractor. A shot-gun type cartridge is loaded into a breech on the engine's intake system. The smouldering paper is placed in the cylinder head, and the cartridge is fired by tapping the protrusion pin with a hammer. This puts a charge into the bore, sending the piston through its stroke, bursting into life. This method, however, deposits carbon which often causes jamming of the decompression valve if cartridges are regularly used. It also puts significantly more strain on the engine.
Later versions of the Field-Marshall had more sophisticated starting systems available - electric starters were optional on the Series 3As.

My Grandfather's first diesel tractor was crank start and he would have to use a bunt that was lit and screwed into the combustion chamber... kind of like a glow plug.

I just watched it again...he is busier than a one legged man in a donkey
kickin' contest gettin' that thing going and keepin' er' runnin'! HA!

Am I see things or is his right thumb a lil' short? Gee, I wonder where how
THAT happened! Not that loosing part of a digit is funny, the whole
deal is awsome if you ask me and I am glad it is now recorded for others
to see just where tractors have come from! I wish I knew the whole sequence.

1- Rotate Flywheel to lube internals stopping when aligned.
2- Pull out that deal and look at it.
3- Light it on fire.
4- Load charge
5- Step aside and slam charge w/ hammer kinda deal...

He does a LOT, much of which I do not know what is what...

That looks like a very dangerous machine to operate, although it is also very cool.
