12 VOLT DASH HEATERS?

Good point. I believe that car air conditioner run about 20,000 BTU. I don't know what the heater runs, but probably more. The electric heater would be about 760 BTU (3.412 * 224). That's less than 1/20 of what cars use. Cars have very little insulation and need to be heated very quickly generally. I think this might be an OK one person heater. If you like give it a try. I would fix the car heater.

Look at it this way, a 70's vintage Ford truck is easy to change the heater core in. I did my 77 years ago and it was a breaze. Sure beats doing modern day cars and trucks.

I know I'm a little late joining this conversation, but I have practical experience with one of those 12v dash heaters.

I have a mini-van that either needs a new fan or a fuseable link, I believe, and both require pulling the dash out, something I have no interest in doing.

I live in So-Cal at about 3000 of elevation, enough to get a little snow twice a year, but with plenty of cold (for us) mornings.

It takes a few minutes for my 12v dash heater to clear a 10" circle, which is good enough to drive slowly to the main road.

The rest of the windshield clears up eventually, usually with the help of paper napkins.

As for keeping me warm, I wear a heavy jacket & gloves, the heater puts out 300w, I believe.

I had one, It never really helped the windshield defrost. Then the switch failed.

It's in the land fill now.. Done with that crap. Chinese junk!

14 year old thread revival....

That's about how long it took my 12V dash heater to defrost my windshield.
