30 ton home-ade log splitter
I have a log splitter i built that works really well and will split about anything. It doesnt flip vertically though. I see people building a lift with hydraulics and different valves. What is comes down to is i cant afford to by another valve and cylinder right now. I was wondering if a 12v scissor jack with 2500lbs capacity might do the trick. I have all kinds of scrap steel and welders, so i can make it fit. I just dont know how much force you would really need to lift a decent log. I wont be lifting anything 48" in dia. Any advice on alternatives would be appreciated. Thanks

I would be concerned about the speed of the jack.

I was think the same thing. It takes about 35 seconds to go 10 inches. Thats is a lot longer a cylinder, but im not going to use my splitter to make money. The lift capaicty would be plenty, right? I guess it still would take me longer to beat the tar out of a log with a sledge and a wedge into lift-able pieces. Thanks for the reply!

Why do you need another cylinder...you already have one ....use the splitter cylinder for the log lift.....some levers, wire, pulleys and ingenuity will make it ...
I saw a processore the used the splitter cylinder to lift up the logs, just cant find it on Youtube just now....

i've seen linear actuators as well as air over hyd jacks, or even electric over hyd ready boxes used as low volume 3pt lifts or hyd sources.

sometimes it's fun to be creative. I know a guy with a lawnmower that has a bottle jack rigged up to a rock shaft to work a 3pt lift. takes a few pumps.. but it does lift, and he spins the valve to drop it... works for a lil garden cultivator and other lil lawmnower implements he has.

If and when I get a splitter I'm thinking I may use the dirt scoop attachment on the back of my 8N tractor as a log lift. I can put several in there at one time, back the tractor up close to splitter beam and adjust the scoop to about waist high. Grab a round out of the scoop, pivot 180 degrees and lay it on the splitter beam. Even a pretty big round could be raised up and slid right onto the beam rather than lifting it myself and pivoting around.

Of course, really big rounds can also be split in vertical mode.
