I also have turfs, and they work well in the snow, not so great in the mud.

Hi wny770,

I have a JD 2210 tractor and used chains on blacktop for the 1st time last year. I have about 120' of blacktop driveway, and around 700' of gravel (between the rest of my drive and the neighbors), so I took a chance with the chains on the blacktop. They are the standard chains from John Deere (non-aggressive). You could not tell for an instant that I used the chains on the blacktop, and I feel like it lets the tractor work so much easier with the chains. Just my .02 - I'll use my chains again this year on the blacktop. I probably would be concerned with super aggressive chains on blacktop, though. Good luck with your choice - I'd use the chains.

Were they front or rear chains???? 2 or 4 link spacing?

In my opinion, turfs look the closest to regular snow tire treads, and for me they work just fine except on glare ice.
I'd bet the main differance when you get down to it is the rubber composition as snows are supposidly a softer compositioon for icy gripping while turfs are 'all season' type composition and a harder rubber for long wearing.

Buddy of mine got the 2-link ladder chains for his 4310 Deere (rear tires only).
His use is on a rather steep asphalt drive with a hairpin curve.
Initially, he did mark (but not gouge) the asphalt...doing 3 point turn rounds. However, by making a more gradual turn around (so the tractor doesn't pivot on one rear tire), he has eliminated all marking completely

I've had rather good luck with my turfs and chains in the snow... although, I also have a gravel driveway, so no need to worry about scratching stuff. Still, good traction.

They are the 2 link chains for the rear tires.

I should have stated I tried very hard to go easy on the pavement and not spin the tires. It worked well in my situation and did not damage the blacktop, and that's why I plan on putting them on again this year.

Chains on NEW asphalt will sink in. I have some pretty patterns in the drive to prove it.

I have a steep drive also, that deadends into a busy highway. I can't take the chance of sliding into the highway...........I use 2 link ladders on the rears.

In certain conditions my tractor will slide down the drive without chains with my turfs.
