My I&T service manual makes no reference to how to service the manual transmission. I notice it has a little plug towards the top front of the tranny that looks like a filler plug.

Does it share the same reservoir of trans hyd fluid with the rest of the tractor or is it serviced separately with maybe gear oil?

Th e plug on top of transmission is the fill and you'll have two drains on transmission and one on bottom of diffy where the draw bar /hitch is. They share common oil and for hyd and transmission. Diffy housing is the sump. Ford 143a or equivalent is the oil. Filler plug does have a dip stick so you know how much to fill. You'll need about 19 US. qt to fill.

If I understand then as long as I have the right amount showing on the dipstick on the rear housing, I don't need to worry about the transmission lubricant level?

Dave,
The level shows right amount of oil in transmission which translate to right amount of oil for differential and hyd system.

JC,
,
PS. Is dip stick not on your transmission cover?

The dipstick is in the differential under the front of the seat. I'll try to get you a picture.

Dave,

Differential is right behind the seat. The housing that the rear axle goes thru is your differential and the cavity inside of it acts as a collection sump for your hyd system. Hyd pump suction and filtration starts from the differential in Ford 1700. I don't know if you have spin in hyd filter or screen in the diffy. What you refereed above is your transmission and cap/dipstick is mounted to transmission cover plate.

Here are a couple of pictures to be sure we are talking about the same components. The top view shows the dipstick toward the back on what I think you are referring to as the differential with the transmission in the front (left).

What got me asking the question is the small square plug at the front of the transmission. If it's filled from the dipstick hole, why do they have a plug at the front. I guess I can use a makeshift dipstick there next time I refill hyd fluid and see if the xmission level comes up with the differential.

The second picture shows a side view. It appears to me the transmission and the differential are not the same unit. I guess they can share fluid if they are mated with Orings or gaskets or something. Maybe I can tell from my service manuals exploded views.

Dave,

Yes. Where your dipstick is the differential housing. On 1700 the dipstick is on transmission cover forward of the diffy. Works just about the same. As you said the diffy and transmission case are two separate castings, but they are open to one another. Oil can travel and maintain constant level in both housing. Splasher are used to aid lubrication in transmission housing and a housing aft of it. Please refer to two pdf files below. The plug that you identified is shown on the NH web site but they don't even call it on the dwg. I suppose it can be used to stick a piece of wire as dipstick but I would not do it. I can see it might be used a hyd oil return path to diffy for some hydraulic implement.

Affirmative on your second paragraph like I explained above.

JC,

Okay. Then I'm good to go. I was concearned becasue it makes a little more noise as I go faster. It's mainly in 9th gear (3rd Range 3rd Gear). My fear was thet the tranny was going dry. I'd always assumed the tranny and rear diff shared the same lubricant bath but need to know for sure before I broke something (else)!

I may as well chime in. On my 1310 I'm using the hole that that plug provides as a return port for my loader.

Is yours a Ford Factory loader?

Dave

It's a Woods 1012 loader that I bought lightly used about a month ago.

I FIXING TO CHANGE MY TRANSMISSION-HYDRAULIC OIL SOON. BOUGHT SOME TRAVELEER TRACTOR FLUID AT TRACTOR SUPPLY TODAY. FOR MY 1310 TRACTOR MY MANUAL HAD THE DIPSTICK-FILLER PLUG ON TOP IN FRONT OF SEAT AND DRAIN PLUGS IN 4 DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. FOR TRANS. IT WAS BOLT ON BOTTOM SIDE. MINE IS FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE AND HAS DRAINPLUG IN FRONT BOTTOM OF WHAT LOOKS LIKE A 3RD MEMBER AND 2 MORE-THE REAR END DRAIN PLUGS AT BOTTOM OF REAR AXLES NEAR CENTER OF TRACTOR CLOSE TO WHERE DRAWBAR ATTACHES. ALL ARE COMMON SUMP AND TRY TO KEEP FLUID CLEAN. FRONT AXEL ON MINE HAS DIPSTICK ON SIDE TOP AND DRAIN ON SIDE BOTTOM OF TRANSSY CASE. ALSO HAS FILL AND DRAIN PLUGS ON INSIDE OF FRONT 4WD WHEELS TO CHANGE IF NEEDED. PROBABLY USE ALL 5 GALLONS FOR ALL THE WAY CHANGE OF FLUID. THANKS GUYS TOO FOR THE INFO
