Changed mine a couple of years ago, I remember having quite a bit of trouble getting the pulley assy off the water pump shaft. My 135 Continental Z134 water pump doesn't have a split ring but rather a set screw, at least mine did. I&T manual didn't show anything other than diagrams, which of course did show a split ring on the water pump shaft but is in fact integral to the water pump. No indication of a set screw in any of the diagrams, might have been a previous owners "modification".
One thing I do remember is that the "friction fit", even after having removed the set screw, had me looking for some other mechanical fastener. Inspection of the new water pump shaft eliminated any concern of a split ring or mechanical fastener prior to splitting the two. As it turned out, a night of allowing penetrating fluid to set, and a lot of patient persuasion the following morning, and I managed to separate the water pump from the pulley assy. Reinstalled the set screw on installation, been two years and quite a few hours, no issues since.
