135 gas, runs till hot then stops

I am not sure what engine? How would I tell? It still quit running again tonight after clearing the mouse hotel,out.

The Continental has four cylinders. The Perkins has three. If you check my refurbish thread (link in my signature below) i had the same concern. Things to look for. After it quits is the gas tank under pressure when twisting the cap. That could indicate a cap vent not working. Are you using an external fuel filter? As mentioned. Is the heat shield in place which diverts heat away from the tank? Mine was gone when I bought my tractor.

Is your fuel line to the cutoff metal? Let us know what you have and we'll go from there. If you are having vapor lock problems, there is reasons why it is. Easy fix.

The exhaust manifold puts out around 500+ degrees of heat. Under load in heavy grass it could probably get hotter. That heat goes up. Anything close to it will get very very hot. Fuel filters, gas lines. You see where I"m going with this. Look at my thread and see how I routed the fuel line and what the heat shield is. Take some pictures if you can and post them of the fuel area of your tractor. -kid

Vapor locking sounds like a possibility I agree. I have taken the gas cap off and the manifold heat would have the gas boiling in the tank.

Does it just the same if the tank is full of gas?

When mine was doing this. It would quit. i'd wait about three to five minutes and it would start right back up. Then about ten minutes it would die. I was in five feet of weeds brush cutting going slow. Since puting a heat shield on, rerouting fuel lines and making sure my cap is venting, it hasn't happened again under the same working conditions. Been thinking of puting an electric cooling fan on the radiator.

I don't think you have said if you have a heat shield between the exhaust and the tank, but if not, get it on. It is just a sheet of metal that has bent as to create a barrier between the exhaust and the components around it. When I got my tractor the sediment bowl was wrapped in aluminum foil as well. Not sure what the purpose of that was.

Clean the rad real good with some simple green and a hose... Then replace the thermostat and retest.

You know, if I was gonna change out the thermostat, I'd also put in a new water pump...you never know...by the way, my temp guage (135 with Cont. engine..that's the one with 4 cyls.) NEVER gets over an 1/8" up in the green..you can watch it when it gets to the green, go up and then when the 'stat opens, it drops right back the yellow/green line...the pump only costs about $70...if I were you, I'd put it in...BobG in VA

I went ahead and took some pictures of the heat shield in case you need to add one on yourself. You can see mine is being held on with bailing wire.

The OP hasn't stated what type of engine he has.

If the OP has a Continental engine the heatshield will look like this.

The heatshield is pretty effective indirecting heat away from the tank. I'm speculating if he was a shield he has a water cooling problem. Drain the radiator and look down in it for ant white buildup in side. If he has recently put coolant in it, it could have air in it. Without pictures or more info we are all speculating on the problem.
