Hears the deal.....I have a 1969 gas engine with a Zenith Carb. Tractor starts fine but will not idle smooth. Seems like the engine is gasping for Air? Under throttle the motor boggs down and will die. Have rebuilt the carb twice now and still no better. No obstructions in the air intake. Replaced the fuel filter, ignition and oil. Voltage regulator is showing ranges from 7 to 12 as the engine rpms changes irregularly. Checked the distributer shaft bushing and all seems well with that. Any ideas to whether or not this is a air, gas or electrical problem?

By the sound of things, you PROBABLY have electrical issues. You need a constant 12V(+) to operate the ignition system. '69 is right on the borderline for having an alternator vs a generator (as OEM equipment....also may have been retrofit w/alternator) Have either checked for issues.

JUst a thought -- have you adjusted the governor linkage correctly since you "rebuilt the carb twice "?

Ok sounds like a good place to start. I changed out the spark plugs and the rotor today. Was looking at replacing the distributor cap? I will have to check the alternator tomorrow. How do you adjust the governor linkage? I didnt adjust anything prior to or after the carb rebuild.

Another question....Do I have to remove the alternator to check the voltage? If not, Obviously when the tractor is running right? Because the tractor is running so rough I would think that the voltage readings would be all over the place. Also, what about the possibilities of it being a Voltage regulator or coil problem?

I know how to adjust governor on the Continental but I think you have the Perkins -- a service manual should have it. The carb would also need adjustment having rebuilt it and the timing may also be off having pulled the distributor. Have you checked those?

Update...Alternator checked out ok. Most believe its a carb or gas issue. I have checked the service manual and made adjustments as stated. Going to check all fuel lines and filter again. Gas is new. May look into buying a new carb??
