As I went through the maintenance items and made sure the PTO and everything worked I noticed the AMP light came on when the PTO was engaged.Purchased a service manaul hoping to find info on what could be causing this. That turned into another story.Manual (772-4166) doesn't mention my 1440 anywhere.Called the service center and after a half hour of being switched from person to person learned that the 1340 model is same as 1440.Go figure. The service manual doesn't have much info on the electrics.Guess you need a motor manual for this.So I used my 1440 w/mower deck today for the first time since I purchased it,running it for over an hour w/the light on.Wow,does this machine work well.Imagine my surprise when it restarted easy when finished,I expected to have a dead battery after this torture test.Noticed the light also came on w/PTO off and headlights on also.I'm leaning towards a false warning light.Anyone know of a way to check for this.I realize I need to check the stator and then the regulator.Any help in what amps or volts this unit should be producing would be a great help.Owners manual states that the system is a 15 AMP set-up if that matters. This is driving me crazy trying to figure this problem out. Thanks in advance for any help w/this.

You need a voltmeter to clip on the battery. If the voltage reads 13.5 to 14.5 volts while running the alternator is working fine.

Thanks Bob for the reply.Battery showing 12.21 VDC .Checked stator (2 yellow) 26.9 VAC. Checked other wire (red) from Regulator to ground, .09 VDC.All of these results were with throttle wide open.I'm leaning towards bad regulator.Another thing I should have mentioned is the machine is using a bigger automotive type battery if this matters. Thanks again,Dave

12.2 volts is definitely not charged. Battery should be 12.6 when fully charged and everything turned off. I think you're on the right track.
