I have a '96 1440 with an electric PTO for the mower attachment. I had to replace it a year ago, and I'm having problems with it again. When I engage the PTO switch, the PTO clutch spins but doesn't engage. Any suggestions?
I would check the armature clearance. If its too large a clearance it may not pull the clutch disk in. Without a manual I would adjust it for .020-.025 inch gap when disengaged. Check it at 3 places 120 degrees apart. Can you hear any clicking sound indicating it's trying to engage? I'm not sure about the interlocks on that model but if it can normally be engaged with the ignition key on and the engine not running, you can check with a screwdriver for magnetic pull when energized. If there isn't any you will have to check voltages for an open fuse or an open PTO coil.
